July 10th was our second son's birthday. We got together in Tillamook, Oregon. My Birthday was Wednesday the 15th. We celebrated it at Rotary on Thursday morning. I usually get either strawberries or raspberries and write my age with whipped cream. On Thursday, the 9th of July we had the new three members of our East County Rotary. Our new District Governor is Rose Bowman from Chehalis and our new international President is from Sri Lanka. It has just been announced that we now believe we have gotten rid of all Polio in India. This leaves only three countries to defeat Polio to complete the job of winning all over the world. Bill Gates has helped by supplying about ½ of the funds needed to stop this terrible and disabling disease. One of our members, Matt Raasch, has been made the manager of Pasha in San Diego. A lady who helped Mike Pasha set up their business in Grays Harbor is now the General Manager of Pasha here. Her name is Penny Eubanks. She is happy to be back and we are very pleased she will again be with us. She is replacing Matt in East County Rotary.
This weekend in Montesano was the big auto show.
July 31 and August 1st, Elma will have : "Heat on the Street" featuring custom, antique and just classy restored and motorcycles. My University is sponsoring a get-to-gether for the alumni at a Mariner's game on July 28th. We plan to meet many of our people we attended with us in years past.
Our athletics program is a member of NCAA Division! They play teams in the Great Northwest Athletic Association and do very well.
The new Fruit Stand in Elma is doing very well and have a lot of new friends. We welcome them to our business community. Summit Pacific Medical Center is re-landscaping the area, adding new parking spaces and will look much better as well as have meeting the needs of the public. We give our congratulations!
Over 400 people attended the all Elma High School reunion. Our daughter said most of the people were the older graduates but it was great to see several people she knew. A few weeks ago I said there was only one service club in East County. Roger Lauckhart told me they still have a Kiwanis club in Montesano and is very active. They had a food booth on Saturday at the Car Show in Montesano. Another activity they have in the planning stage is their Spaghetti Feed on Home Coming in October.
Elma has a couple who help hundreds of people every month. They are David and Bettye Norris who live in McCleary but run the Elma Clothing Bank. They distribute clothing for all ages every Tuesday and Thursday. They are open from 10 am until 2:30 pm. The men at Set Free work with them almost every day they are there. Many of the Set Free fellows get some clothing thay need too. They perform odd jobs in the community for donations and are wonderful workers.
We had a couple of them work for us and they did a great job. The program they follow is very effective in turning their lives around and getting them on a new track. Mike Tallman is the leader and has been very successful.
A number of business leaders are working on becoming Friends of East County Rotary. They want to be a part of an organization that helps support the needs of people in East County. Rotary will soon have stamped out Polio on the earth but we also support our DECA winners who got to go to the national competition in Florida. The little league in Montesano is going to state and the East County Rotary helped them get there.
Elma Chamber is very active and working on the community garage sale. The registration and $5 will get your sale on the map. The Days are July 24, 25 and 26. Heat on the Street is scheduled for July 31 and August 1st. They expect over 250 units of outstanding cars and motorcycles. August will bring the county fair and a lot of activity here in Elma. Please come and visit the fun times we will have in Elma.
