Chuck Sonner, new director of the Winlock/Vader Food Bank, unpacks a box of oatmeal Wednesday during the food bank’s operating hours. Sonner took over the position last month when former director Stan Taloff stepped down.

The Winlock and Vader Food Bank acquired a new director at the beginning of November as volunteers began preparing for the annual Walk ‘n Knock food drive this Saturday.

Chuck Sonner has taken over for former director Stan Taloff after Taloff had led the food bank (third-largest in Lewis County) for 27 years.

"Everything is volunteer here," said Sonner, who said he began working with the food bank around a year ago.

The food bank serves families from through the Winlock and Vader communities, an estimated 300 per month and growing, said Sonner. No income requirements or other personal information is required, except the food bank does ask how many individuals live in your household, as donors like to keep track of such information.

Volunteers with the food bank are expected to be seen this Saturday collecting donations from the doorsteps of local residents for the annual Walk ‘n Knock.

Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to meet at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 9 a.m., while donors can call Sonner at (360) 785-3909 to arrange for pickup ahead of time.

There is a great need at this time for non-perishable items such as dried pasta, rice, canned meats, cereal and baby food. Cash donations will also be accepted and put to good use.

Otherwise, the food bank is open Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their location behind Never the Same on First. St.
