MENLO - Pe Ell-Willapa Valley's defense did not allow Raymond much of anything and Max Smith provided the brunt of the offense behind a brutal Titans offensive line during a 49-0 homecoming shellacking Friday night at Crogstad Field in Menlo. Smith rushed for 4 touchdowns and scored another on defense and galloped for 154 yards on 11 carries (14 ypc). The Titans mashed their way to 356 yards rushing and averaged nearly 9 yards per carry. Pe Ell-Will apa Valley's (PWV) defense recovered 4 fumbles.
"We played well in all facets," Titans Assistant Football Coach John Peterson told the Herald. "The kids were focused and ready to play. We had a good week of preparation. We did a good job. We had a good week ofn practice. With homecoming, sometimes you lose focus."
Landin Isaksen netted 105 yards running the ball on 7 attempts and Kollin Jurek added another 60 yds on 10 rushed and a touchdown. Jurek had a kickoff return for 27 yards and a punt return for 24 yds. "We've got some pretty good running backs," Peterson said.
"The lines blocked well," Peterson said. "The other backs are blocking well. When things are going well, it's a fun game. It was very enjoyable for us. I've been on the other side of that kind of game. It's nice to see a gameplan that you put a lot of time into work so well."
The Titan defense provided a stone wall for Raymond halfback McCartney Maden to try and run through.
"We were very cognizant of the fact that Raymond has the fastest guy in the league," Peterson said. "We had him with 10 carries for minus four yards. We did a terrific job on him. He's like a video game, scary, every time he touches the ball."
"McCartney Maden had a tough night offensively," RHS Assistant Football Coach Mike Tully told the Herald. "PWV was really swarming him wherever he went. He was able to make a bit of an impact on defense with an interception and a fumble forced (and) recovered."
Tackle leaders for the Titans were Luke Gerow with 8, Jurek with 7, Smith with 6, and Andrew Minton with 5. Also recovvering fumbles were Tyler Adkins, Landin Isaksen and Adam Smaciarz.
"Kayden Miller in the defensive line and Adam Smaciarz in the defensive line and Luke Gerow at linebacker was amazing," Peterson noted. "Kollin Jurek played really well on defense. Max is Max, he made some plays on defense and scored a touchdown on defense. Max was great."
For the second straight week, placekicker Garrett Keeton did a good job on extra points, punting and kicking off. Against Raymond he made 5 of 6 extra point attempts. "Our little freshman kicker continues to do really well," Peterson said. "He did very well kicking the ball." The Titans' only PAT miss was because of a dropped snap.
The Titans punted only once, did not throw any passes and turned the ball over once, a fumble, in the game.
The Titans made 15 first downs and Raymond had 3. The Gulls were penalized 3 times for 15 yards and PWV was whistled twice for 10 yds.
Pe Ell-Willapa Valley led 14-0 after once quarter, 40-0 at halftime and 47-zip heading into the fourth quarter.
There were some positives for Raymond on offense.
"It can be hard to find positives in a big loss like we had on Friday night, but there were glimpses of some good things," Tully said. "When we properly executed our blocking schemes, we had some good runs. We were 6 of 7 passing on the night, which is a great stat for us. Adrian Quintana had a good night throwing the ball, going 6 of 7 for 27 yards. Audi Phimmasone caught five of those passes.
"Joseph Villalpando was our leading rusher on the night with 40 yards on 13 carries," Tully reported.
"We're really just struggling to find consistency on both sides of the ball," Tully said. "We only have a few guys that had significant varsity experience coming into the season, so we have a bunch of guys that are learning on the fly right now. We are seeing progress every week, but it is a slow process. Luckily, we were able to stay pretty healthy, so we're hoping to fine-tune some things this week and prepare for Chief Leschi."
The Seagulls (0-3) look for their first win Friday when they host Chief Leschi (1-2), a 45-14 loser to Ilwaco last week.
"We just got film on Chief Leschi, but I haven't had a chance to take a look," Tully said. "They have a new head coach this year, but he has been an assistant there for a couple years, so I'm guessing they'll be running a spread-style offense. At this point, we can't look past anyone, so we'll have to come prepared and ready to play."
Pe Ell-Willapa Valley entertains Onalaska (3-0) Friday night at Trojan Stadium in Pe Ell at 7 pm.
"They're a fine football team," Peterson said. "Their line is bigger than the Seahawks. They're huge. Their fullback (Ashton Haight) and quarterback (Lucas Kreger) are very good. They run a triple option, broken bone, midline, Wishbone.
On the season, the Loggers have defeated Toutle Lake (62-0), Amity, Oregon (32-14) and Wahkiakum (58-6).
Notes: Titan running back Peter Hamilton did not play after injuring his knee early on during the Concrete game (Sept. 14). Hamilton will have an MRI done this week, according to Peterson..."We had Raymond with 47 yards of total offense," Peterson said...At press time, there were no official statistics on Raymond.
