The Willapa Harbor community once again responded with solid support for cancer victim Shannen Walker, who is undergoing chemotherapy. The Shannen Walker Fundraiser was conducted Saturday from 5-7 pm at New Life Fellowship in Raymond. The event was put on together by Heath Layman and Michelle Layman, and Shannen's family and friends, according to Michelle Layman.
Michelle Layman told the Herald while out of town Sunday afternoon, "We did very well with the (silent auction) baskets and had lots of great donations. We sold over $1,500 and about 175 meals."
Layman, who is director of the Willapa Harbor Chamber of Commerce, added, "We were pleasantly surprised to sell so many of the pulled pork meals. We ran out of buns, went out and got more, and kept feeding people."
Layman's husband, Heath, prepared his special Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwiches, and the volunteer kitchen staff helped prepare baked beans, coleslaw, and a dessert for the carry-out orders.
"Pioneer Grocery gave us a great deal on the pork and food," Michelle Layman said. "We had a great turnout of 20 to 25 volunteers."
