The folks who live over on the east side of Ryderwood report they can once again hear the water flowing in Campbell Creek. The recent rains have raised and muddied the waters in area creeks, rivers and streams. While the rain is desperately needed, I'd rather have it fall a bit slower so that it can better soak into this hard clay soil.
What's happening in Ryderwood this week?
Friday's Café dinner will feature Patti's Chicken Enchiladas. Patti is one of the newer cooks and she comes with great experience. Served at 5 p.m., the all-inclusive meal includes salad, side dishes, beverage and dessert for $9. Please call 295-0875 by Wednesday to make reservations.
This Saturday, the first one of the month, means Ryderwood's Veterans will serve their monthly Town Breakfast. The guys serve up the best of the best from 8 to 10 a.m.: eggs how you like them, ham or sausage, pancakes and biscuits & gravy. All breakfasts are served with orange juice and bottomless coffee.
Sunday has Card Bingo at 6:30 p.m. in Community Hall. This is a game that requires zero skill - just bring a little change (4 nickels, 4 dimes, 4 quarters and a dollar) to swap with the neighbors. There's also the "7 of Diamonds Dime Pot". Players put in a dime each week until someone wins a game with the 7 of diamonds. It doesn't happen very often, so the last winner got more than $20 in dimes!
For those of us who don't cook much, Monday evening's Burgers and Soup at the Café is/are a real treat. Volunteers prepare and serve from 4-6 p.m. The burgers (1/3 lb. beef, chicken or veggie) are as good as they get.
Another staple meal for me is Tuesday's Senior Lunch provided by CAP. All Seniors over 60 and their guests are eligible for the $3 meals. This week's menu is: Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Baked Beans, Pineapple Coleslaw and Sliced Carrots. Call Marty at 295-0096 this week to make or break reservations.
As a head's up, Veterans Day is next Wednesday the 11th. Ryderwood's Veterans (there are both AMVETS and VFW Posts here) will host an Open House for all veterans at the Café from 10 to noon.
Ryderwood is home to two veterans organizations, VFW Post #7010 and AMVETS Post #7010. There are more than 60 members between the two groups - some vets belong to both. They do an incredible amount of good work for our town and its veterans.
Until next week...
