The American Red Cross is working tirelessly to help people devastated by Hurricane Ian. Many communities are unrecognizable after the storm and volunteers from all 50 states and the District of Columbia are helping those affected and will be helping them recover for weeks and months to come.
"People's lives were turned upside down by this massive storm," said Alex Dieffenbach, Northwest Region CEO. "They need your help now. Please consider making a donation to help people affected by disasters or giving blood today (Oct. 4)."
In the last week, 31 members of our Northwest Region were assigned to support Hurricane Ian relief efforts, most of them physically deploying to Florida.
- Volunteers like Steve Hatfield, a retired firefighter and EMT from Centralia who is assigned to one of 80 Red Cross emergency response vehicles now on the roads delivering tens of thousands of meals and relief supplies.
- Also, Brenda Lawlor of Mount Vernon, who is in Florida helping with residential property damage assessment. Preliminary estimates show that tens of thousands of homes have been affected. It will be weeks before we know the full scope of the damage and it will take time to reach all of those who need help.
- And Spokane's John Jonckers, a veteran and retired nurse who deployed the morning after his birthday to support individual direct care and disaster health services to clients. Monday night, nearly 2,600 people sought refuge in more than 20 Red Cross and partner shelters across Florida.
