Lebam school to open August 30.
The board of directors of the Lebam Schools has about completed arrangements for the opening of school on August 30. An efficient corps of teachers has been engaged, and the patrons of the school have anticipated an exceptional year's work.
The Lebam high school is fully accredited and pupils from other districts are taking advantage of this fact and arranging to attend school here. For this reason it is expected that the few vacant houses here will soon be occupied by families, thus increasing the enrolment in the grades as well as in the high school.
Everybody going to big picnic.
Everything is now ready for the second annual Merchants and Farmer's picnic which will be held on the Menlo grounds today. With the facilities for transportation offered by the special train service, it is expected that the attendance will greatly exceed that last year, and a genuine good time and celebration promised. The various committees have worked hard to insure the comfort and pleasure of those attending, and no detail has been slighted. There will be plenty of coffee, cider and buttermilk which will be served free for all, to supplement the good things in the lunch baskets. A good program of speaking has been arranged for the morning hours, after which a couple of hours will be devoted to dinner and social chat. Beginning at 1:30pm, a full program of sports, with plenty of valuable merchandise prizes for the various events, will be carried out.

Tragic mishap claims life of Mrs. Dietrich.
Mrs. Alta M. Dietrich, 74, prominent Raymond woman, was fatally injured about 7pm Tuesday when struck by the family automobile at the Dietrich residence.
Her husband, Burk B. Dietrich was backing the family auto into the garage with Mrs. Dietrich guiding him. When she called for him to stop he accidentally struck the accelerator instead of the break, causing the car to lurch back and pinning Mrs. Dietrich to the garage wall. The car continued through the wall, leaving Mrs. Dietrich underneath.
Oregon Man buys South Bend Journal.
Assets of the South Bend Journal, which has been suspended since March, were purchased Saturday at a foreclosure sale by Hal W. Schiltz, Oregon newspaper publisher and engraving machine salesman.
Schiltz, publisher of the Myrtle Creek Mail, entered the only bid, $6,000 for the assets of the Journal. Included in the sale are the printing equipment and materials, office furniture and machines, and miscellaneous items.

Earley nabs sign vandals.
The political season got its first dose of intrigue last week when sign vandals were nabbed in a nighttime stakeout.
Joe Earley and Marina Littleton were tired of losing political signs they put on a Fowler Street lot. So, last Friday night they went on a stakeout which paid off after about 20 minutes.
Just after 11pm, two male youths began vandalizing the signs, Earley said. After they finished, Earley and Ms. Littleton confronted them.
She went off to call police while Earley stayed with them. One of the youths even asked "why he was harassing them," Earley said.
Police came and took the two Raymond 16 year old boys into custody. They were issued citations for minors being in possession of alcohol, according to Raymond Police Chief Tom Wilson.
Two on Way to Saudi Arabia.
Two Willapa servicemen left Tuesday for duty with U.S. forces being deployed to Saudi Arabia. Private Chuck Coma, 21, a 1987 South Bend High School graduate and the son of Tom and Donna Coma, is a scout with the 101st Infantry, formerly stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
