One hundred years ago this month marks a sad milestone in Washington history when the state officially went "dry" on New Years, 1916. Grays Harbor's thriving saloon scene came to an abrupt halt as their keepers were forced to close their doors when the clock struck midnight. A few attempted to remain in business selling soft drinks but most folded without just governmental compensation to their owners. The Horseshoe Bar was operated by John Brunstrom at 215 Eighth Street in Hoquiam and was among the state's many shuttered saloons.
