Pe Ell stunned Willapa Valley 26-7 Friday night at Crogstad Field in Menlo to put a dark cloud over the homecoming celebration. The Vikings were held to a season-low 74 yards rushing.
All of the scoring was done in the first half. Seth Flemetis scored Valley’s touchdown on a 1-yard run in the first quarter Robert Espina booted the extra point. Flemetis gained 67 yards on 16 rushes.
The Trojans scored one TD in the first quarter and three in the second stanza.
“The stage was set perfectly for a Viking raid,” Willapa Valley HS Head Football Coach Greg Wonhoff told the Herald. “The weather was gorgeous, it was Homecoming, and we had a well thought out game plan, which we hoped would be enough to give ourselves another win for the record book.
“We took the opening kickoff and proceeded to control the ball for just a hair over eight minutes, leading to our first score,” Wonhoff pointed out. “I must add that the Trojans held us during that drive and forced us to punt, but we were able to cover up the mishandled return and take over again.
“Things were looking up, especially when Matt ‘Front End’ Konigsberger hit Hunter ‘Stash’ Gray for a 16-yard pass over the middle.” Wonhoff said. “Was tonight going to be the night we were able to get our anemic passing game on track?”
Konigsberger completed only 4 of 11 passes for 34 yards with an interception.
“We kicked off to the Trojans and immediately saw that the fired up, Fluke-led Trojans, had something else in mind,’ Wonhoff said. “From their first play from scrimmage, they let us know that they might be a 0-4 team, but a 0-4 team from their league isn't a 0-4 team from our league. It's like comparing apples and oranges. There isn't much doubt about it, with the exception of Raymond; the teams of the Central League are exactly that, teams in another league. They scored on their first possession of the game, but weren't able to make their two-point conversion attempt. Throughout the remainder of the half, both teams traded possessions, but neither allowed the other to score.
“We were able to go into the locker room at half time, holding on to a 1-point lead,’ Wonhoff noted. “The plan was to make the needed adjustments, come out in the second half, and take charge. It was during this second half when the Viking warship became plagued by the doldrums. With the exception of a few drives in the fourth quarter, it was the Trojans' half to shine. We were only allowed to run three offensive plays the entire third quarter. There is one way to turn that negative into a positive. Our defenders racked up a lot of tackles. Drew ‘Werd’ Pearson had 13, Seth ‘Silo’ Flemetis had 12, Dylan ‘Marshal’ Barrett, Trevor ‘Captain’ Cook, and Jason ‘J-Flu’ Fluke each had 10, and Stephen ‘Peg’ Camenzind had 8.”
Konigsberger grabbed an interception. Cook recovered a fumble and Flemetis forced one.
“I felt that we came out a bit uninspired,” Wonhoff said. “We just can't afford to do that, especially against a team that was playing as emotionally as were the Trojans. I am so proud of what Joshie Fluke has done with his troops during his first year as their head coach. Talk about a player that played with emotion. When he played for us, every down was played as if it was going to be his last. After the game I told him that he might have done us a tremendous favor. When the Vikes sail into Ocean Shores this Friday, we had better be ready for an all out battle. We need to play like a gang of crazed berserkers. An effort like tonights just won't cut it against the Hyaks. You can be sure that they are going to want to get themselves back on track after suffering their loss to the talented and very well coached Seagulls of Raymond.”

South Bend was shut out for the third time in four games during a 28-0 loss at Westport versus Ocosta Friday night. The game was scoreless at halftime.
The Wildcats scored on a short run in the third quarter and three running TDs of 2, 12 and 8 yards in the final stanza.
“We played well in the first half – out-gaining them 125-59 in yardage, but could not punch it in when we got down inside their 5-yard line,” South Bend HS Head Football Coach tom Sanchez told the Herald.
“They ran the second half kickoff back to our 10-yard line, but we forced a fumble and recovered,” Sanchez noted. “The field position was an issue, though, and we gave up a score in the third quarter that hurt us. They had a long punt return in the fourth quarter that set up another score, so we have some work to do in kick coverage.”
“We continue to improve in our physical play, but we need to improve our mental focus,” Sanchez said.
“R.J. King (7 tackles, fumble recovery) played well defensively in his first game, and I thought Marcus Overstake (10 tackles) and Mitch Edwards (interception) had their moments on defense as well,” Sanchez said. Spencer Case blocked a kick.
Ryan Overstake blasted his way for 116 yards rushing on 18 carries.
“Offensively, Ryan Overstake ran the ball well, and Jordan Dockter played a good game in his first start at quarterback, and our offensive line continues to improve,” Sanchez added.
Ocosta netted 225 yards on the ground compared to 185 for SBHS.
The Tribe committed one turnover and OHS had two. The Indians were penalized 110 yards, while Ocosta had only 20 yards assessed for penalties.
The Indians fell to 0-4 while the Wildcats went to 2-3 on the season. South Bend.
Raymond’s defense held North Beach to under 75 total yards during a 28-6 triumph Friday night at Lt. Jim Davis Field. The Hyaks could not muster a first down in the second half against the Seagulls’ stingy defense.
“We did not play our best offensive football early,” Raymond HS Head Football Coach Rob Clements told the Herald. “We were dealt some adversity, and our defense was able to keep us in the game until we were able to right the ship. I thought we came out a little too fired up. Once we settled down, and focused on the little things, we were able to control the game.
“They did a nice job of minimizing our big plays, and forcing us to drive the entire field,” Clements said.
Raymond running back Alex Sida carried the load for the Seagulls on offense with 150 yards rushing and two touchdowns and Darol Ratsavongsy ran for 2 scores and 85 yards.
“Darol and Alex both ran hard,” Clements said. “They picked up tough yards to extend drives. They both seem to get stronger as the game goes on. Rayce Newman did a great job controlling the game at the line of scrimmage. He gets better every week.
“Coach Abbott had a great game plan,” Clements said. “Once we settled down, we were able to execute it. They did not get a first down in the second half.
“We have said we need to be Road Warriors this year, and this was our first step,” Clements said. “I love the way the kids responded to early adversity in the game. There are still some execution issues that need to be resolved, but their effort and attitude are never in doubt and that is a sign of a good team.”
Raymond D-back Marvin So racked up 10 total tackles and picked off a pass in the end zone in the second quarter. The Hyaks were also stymied on downs at the Gulls’ 6-yard line in the first quarter. Rayce Newman and Neal Riley contributed 8 tackles each.
“Marvin So and Kason Koski had excellent games from the corner position,” Clements said. “They like to throw, and we pretty much left those two matched up one on one on the edge. They rose to the challenge all night. Their ability to match up allowed us to dedicate the other players to the run.
“Marvin had 92 return yards on punt,” Clements reported. “The return team did a nice job giving him time to catch the ball, and he was able to find a seem and do the rest. We were consistently starting drives with great field position in the second half.”
Raymond opened the scoring on a 4-yard run by Ratsavongsy at about the 2-minute mark in the first half. The Gulls led 7-0 at halftime.
After a bad punt in the third quarter, Raymond set up shop at the NB 42 and went the distance in just four plays culminated by a 14-yard TD run by Ratsavongsy.
The Seagulls soared to a 3-TD lead on the last play of the third quarter went QB Newman threw a 25-yard score to Sida.
Sida scored RHS’s fourth TD on a 7-yard run with about 4 minutes to play. Andres Martinez booted his fourth straight extra point for a 28-zip edge.
The Hyaks got on the board when Saul Gonzalez ran 82 yards up the gut on the kickoff. The 2-point conversion was a failure.
The game was billed as the Pacific League showdown for supremacy as both teams were undefeated and atop the standings. Raymond upped its mark to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the league, while the Hyaks fell to 1-1 and 4-1.
In this week’s Friday’s games, South Bend visits Raymond and Willapa Valley travels to Oyehut to face North Beach.
