The first-ever girls' soccer match for the combined team from Raymond and South Bend high schools resulted in a historic win for the Riptide when they defeated visiting Ilwaco 2-1 after 80 minutes of play last Tuesday (Sept. 4) at the Raymond HS football field. It was also the inaugural soccer match for Ilwaco. Kyra Gardner, a ninth grader from RHS, scored both goals for the winners.
Riptide Head Soccer Coach John Enslow attributed the win to "a fantastic team effort by the entire team. Every girl in the game gave a remarkable effort and I was very proud of how they stepped up to the challenge of an Ilwaco team that should be a force in the near future in their league.
"These girls made history with their first official win, first goal, (and) everything that happens right now is a first for the program and it's a lot of fun to be part of it all," Enslow added.
"Defensively, sophomore stopper Bre Bowling led the charge and kept Ilwaco at bay for nearly 80 minutes before they finished their first goal," Enslow said.
"Junior Cynthia Orozco staged a first-half shutout in goal and senior Giselle Ramirez took over in the second have with another bold effort," Enslow said.
"Kiana Bale saved a goal late in the second half from her right defensive position that would have tied the game," Enslow said.

Castle Rock nipped the Riptide girls' soccer team 1-0 last Thursday at Raymond. The left forward from Castle Rock floated a goal early in the first half to take the lead and kept it through the remainder of the game.
Diana Ramirez, a ninth grader from SBHS, stepped in as goalie after Giselle Ramirez kept Castle Rock within 1 goal. Diana Ramirez proceeded to shut out the Rockets with several saves in the second half.
Gardner had a few outstanding shots on goal, one of which bounced off the left post of the goal, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Junior Zaira Medina and Bowling, a sophomore, were noted by Coach Enslow "for their extra efforts on offense and defense respectively."
The Riptide (1-1) hosted Forks last night at Millam Field in South Bend and travels to Castle Rock Thursday for a 4 pm match. Raymond-South Bend then visits Iwaco Tuesday at 5 pm.
