Each year the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Robert Gray Chapter, offers a $500.00 scholarship to a High School student from our local community. This award was created in 1934 as the DAR Good Citizenship Pilgrimage, because the state winners, Senior Girls from four-year high schools received a trip to Washington, DC. In 1952 the name was changed to DAR Good Citizens Committee and monetary awards were presented to winners.
This Good Citizenship Committee recognizes and rewards high school seniors who possess good citizenship qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their home, schools, and communities. Each award is given on a merit basis including completion of a questionnaire, essay, scholastic record and a letter of recommendation. Only one scholarship is given at the local level and this individual will now move up to the State level and the State DAR will make their selection and send their choice to the National DAR.
United States citizenship is not required. National awards for the first, second and third place winners include scholarships to the school of their choice.
The 2015/2016 winner of this areas scholarship award is: Emily Bjornsgard from Ocosta High School. There were also 4 runners up as listed in the photo. Each received a certificate and pin for their efforts.
On behalf of the NSDAR Robert Gray Chapter, we salute these extraordinary young people.
