Mark Busby, the youngest competitor at the Pacific County Fair Ranch Sorting event. During the final day of the sorting event Busby and his sorting partner, Janelle Lutz, took the jackpot for the event.
"Mark is only nine years old and has been after me to ride a horse. But the horse that I was going to let him ride was not ready but he did get to ride a horse called Howdy. This was the first time that Mark rode solo and he won the event without a single dirty cow," said Val Rowe.
In the Ranch Sorting event a pair of riders work a closed pen of numbered cows and have to place the cows into a separate pen starting at a randomly picked number, and then follow in numeric order from the first number given. The teams are judged by speed and accuracy, and the ability to keep "dirty cows" (those out of order or a blank cow) out of the gated area.
