Club adviser Cindy Broadbent heads the TRiO program.
The TRiO Club of Centralia College is holding its 11th annual U.S.A. Today Make a Difference Day project Saturday, Oct. 22, on the college campus.
The club is seeking donations of new coats and shoes for children in Centralia College's preschool programs. Last year, the club gave between 50 and 60 packages to children three to five years old and their families.
In addition to new coats and shoes, children will be able to choose gloves, homemade scarves, hats, toothbrushes and books.
Families will enjoy dinner and a variety of activities, including face painting and making Flubber. There will also be a "pay it forward" table, where children can make something for someone special.
"We believe that, although the children are only three to five years old, they can be empowered by giving back something themselves," said TRiO Club adviser Cindy Broadbent. "Each child also receives a certificate recognizing them as a 'Future College Student' so they're encouraged to attend college when they get older."
For families and older children, hats, scarves, toiletries, clothes, shoes and household items will also be available for free.
"We seek to create positive change in ourselves, our organization, and our community," Broadbent said. "To achieve these goals, all members are encouraged to take the initiative to lead and/or contribute to Centralia College and their community."
TRiO is a federally funded program that assists first generation, low income and disabled students in achieving a college education. TRiO Club is a student club that gives members an opportunity to become involved in activities that support academic, social and personal success and leadership skills, and extend goals and a "helping hand" philosophy.
