Many of us who grew up in Winlock remember what it was like around Christmas time. I remember Santa coming to the Fire Station and giving out candy. I also remember crying every time I saw him. For some reason a guy in a red suit with a white beard scared the dickens out of me. We also had our school play and my Mom would sew us new clothes every year. One year, we made reindeer ears and I still have them today. At our school Christmas program we would sing our heart out every year. I don't think one of us could carry a tune at that age but we were so proud and instead of singing we would basically yell it.
Another thing I remember is decorating the Christmas tree. We would decorate it so beautifully only to have our cat knock down all the Christmas balls off the tree until he finally was able to knock down the tree itself. Next thing you would see were his eyes, staring out from under the tree with the look on his face of what just happened. He was notorious for knocking off all of the balls. I swear that cat could climb, how he reached all of the balls was unknown to us but every year he was successful. When Christmas Eve finally arrived, we would unwrap all of our presents. I always knew what I was getting for Christmas because I was the child who would snoop around the house looking for my presents. If they were wrapped, I would un-wrap them, I did not have the patience to wait. My husband knows this so instead of trying to hide them and wrap them, he gives them to me the day he buys them. But I can say, I do not look around the house for my other presents, so far, so good this year, let's hope it holds!
