One thing nice about Winlock is the fact that neighbors help neighbors. In the city, you are lucky if you have even met your neighbors, and helping seems a foreign word to everyone.
I am lucky to have my sister as my number one neighbor but growing up we had great neighbors. If someone's cow's got out, we would all work together to get them back in. If there was a fence to mend, it wasn't unusual for the one to see the other one out there working on it and for the other person to join in. I can remember walking home after my car had run out of gas, who picked me up but my neighbor Orville. He was the kind of guy who didn't only pick me up but he went and put gas in my car to get me home.
There was one time my Dad was at work and the cows got out, I had pneumonia and Orville yelled at me to get back in the house why he chased the cows all by himself. I knew we had a great neighbor in him when we I had moved away and left my dog behind. He fed our dog tea and cookies every day at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and the dog knew exactly what time of the day it was.
Then there is my other neighbor, just recently the neighbor across the creek's cow's got out, I just got home from the hospital and my neighbor Mr. Chatterton up on the hill, came down and helped me keep the cows from using my yard as their bathroom. He's not a young guy but I honestly think he is the youngest guy at heart I have ever known.
If you are lucky to have a neighbor like my sister, Lindsay or Orville, let them know it. Thanks to all of you, I am blessed not only to call you my neighbor but my friend. Orville Ojala, may you continue to rest in peace!
