Who and Hunger fans crash the Winlock Library for crafts and games

Fans of the Dr. Who TV series, as well as the Hunger Games books and movies, were treated to a mash-up party held at the Winlock Timberland Library Nov. 19 to celebrate both the 50th anniversary of Dr. Who, as well as the new Hunger Games movie in theaters. Library patron Picabou Worden, of Winlock, sports a hand-made fez, a fashion popularized by the Eleventh Doctor, portrayed by Matt Smith. Smith has held the role of the titular character since 2010 and will be leaving the show this year, passing the sonic screwdriver, as it were, to the Twelfth Doctor, to be played by Peter Capaldi.

The symbol of the Mockingjay, from The Hunger Games, was painted on t-shirts for guests to take home with them. In the books, a mockingjay token was brought by Katniss Everdeen, the main character of the series, into the Hunger Games tournament as a reminder of home. If participants win the tournament, they are able to bring food back to their home district, though just enough for the next year. If they lose, they will have been killed by their opponents and their district gets nothing. The latest Hunger Games movie, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, was released in theaters Friday, while the book series itself has been completed since 2010 and is available for checkout at a number of Timberland locations, including Winlock.
