We have a Right to defend ourselves with heavy arms

To the Editor:

This is a response to Patricia Neves’ screaming in South Bend (in last week’s Herald).

Firstly, I would like to remind you of the main points of the second amendment: 1. Enabling people to organize, a militia system; 2. Suppressing insurrection; 3. Participating in law enforcement; 4. Detouring a tyrannical government; 5. Repelling invasion; 6. Suppressing insurrection; 7. Facilitating a natural right of self-defense, as ratified by the states and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, secretary of state, a well-regulated militia being necessary to right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

These things hold as true today as the day it was written. This says nothing about hunting or recreational use of a firearm. There probably would have been a lot less Jewish people exterminated if they would have had a similar law and someone had not taken there guns from them! I know things seem like they would never escalate in to a situation like the Jewish people had in this country. But what would happen if say our money system fails? Or our fuel stops flowing, and you can't drive any more because there’s no gas, and say all of a sudden you need to protect your self from a hostile government or police force that all of a sudden wants our guns and they are armed with assault stile guns, but we don't have any. It might be a little hard to defend ourselves from someone that does. I now it sounds good that by taking our right to own semiautomatic guns and multi-capacity clips is going to save someone, but in reality, it won't and the criminals will still have them because they will bypass the legal system; so it does no good to suppress the rights of legal gun buyers or owners.

Darrell Patrick,

South Bend, Wash.
