Mt. Mt. Mania Fun Run organizer Dave Vorse was honored for having spent 20 years putting the race together during the annual event last Saturday in Castle Rock.
Noted for having spent two decades officiating the race as a part of Cowlitz Valley Runners (CVR) and never being able to compete himself, Vorse was presented with a commemorative t-shirt, jacket and medal naming him “Mountain Master” by brother and fellow CVR member Mike Vorse after awards were given for those who finished the race.
“If you want a good example to follow, this is the guy right here,” said Mike Vorse of his bother’s commitment both to the community and the event.
Dave Vorse said he was grateful or the recognition and the title, and said one of the main reasons he puts on the race is to encourage area residents, particularly young families, to remain active and lead healthier lifestyles.
“We have two or three families that the whole family’s come,” he said of those participating in the race that day, which included around 90 people ages 4 to 82 running, or walking, on either a 5K or 10K track.
Fastest that day in the 10K race for the men was Darryl Kent with a time of 46 minutes and 20 seconds, while first for the women was Laura Moore-Yoder with a time of 50 minutes and 29 seconds. Both Kent and Moore-Yoder were also named King and Queen of the Hill, a new award category for 2014, as they had been the first on the 10k track to reach the top of a large incline along Bond Rd. near the intersection with Germond Rd.
In addition to helping encourage healthy lifestyles, Mt. Mania also raises funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, as well as local youth events and activities, with Dave Vorse stating the event typically generates around $2,000 in funding for these groups every year.

Runners get started on both the 5K and 10K tracks, which they were free to run or walk as fast as they liked. Part of the purpose of the event, according to organizers, was to encourage healthy habits, and not necessarily competition.
