Willapa Valley split two matches and placed sixth at the competitive Adna Volleyball tournament last week. The Vikings defeated North Beach and lost against Northwest Christian.
“This past week we have been on the road and I was pleased with the performance of my team,” Willapa Valley HS Head Volleyball Coach Lori Snodgrass told the herald. On Tuesday (Oct. 22) we traveled to North Beach to play a much-improved Hyak team on their Senior Night and Dig Pink Night.
“Throughout the first three sets, there were long rallies with a lot of hustle shown on both sides of the court<’ Snodgrass said. “We won the first game 25-22. We served inconsistently in the second game, missing 5 serves, and dropped that game 22-25. We bounced back to win the third and fourth games 25-22 and 25-11.
“Karli Friese led the team at the net with 6 kills.” Snodgrass noted. “Baylee Layman also showed improvement at the net. Madison Huber played well in the back row and served for 100 percent on the night. Emily Fluke also went 22 for 23 from the service line.”

”On Thursday we traveled to Lacey to take on an undefeated Northwest
Christian team,” Coach Snodgrass reported. “Despite losing the match, we played much better against them and were able get a win in the third game in their home gym...something we had been unable to do before. Even the scores were (closer) 16-25, 16-25, 25-20, 16-25. It felt like a tight match.
“There seemed to be one rotation in each match were they were able to get too many points off of us,” Snodgrass said. “As a team, we served the ball well, putting the ball in play 96 percent of the time.
“Emily Fluke did a good job varying her sets and allowing all of our hitters to get kills on the night with Mackenzie Trotter and Karli Friese leading the way.” Snodgrass added.
Adna Tournament
“On Saturday we went to the Adna tournament where we proved that when we are playing our best we can be very competitive with teams from the
Central League,” Snodgrass said. “We had a lot of close matches where we lost by just 2 or 3 points, but inconsistency got us and we finished sixth after pool play.”
The Vikes are 8-4 overall and 7-3 in the Pacific League, and are in third place.
“We’re heading into a very important home stretch of the regular season,” Snodgrass said. “We’ve got some big games this week.”
The Vikes hosted South Bend Monday night and entertains Raymond tomorrow.
