”It was a good first match of the season for us,” Valley head coach Lori Snodgrass told the Herald. “As a team we served consistently on the night, putting 92 percent of our serves in play. We also had a good night passing; especially on serve receive, which allowed us to get the ball to our hitters.
“Brooke Spoor led the way with 6 kills,” Snodgrass said. “Sydney Wilkeson had a good all around night and Karli Friese had 9 digs in the back row. Emily Fluke, our senior setter, did a fine job of varying her sets and allowing all of hitters a chance to attack the ball.
Pe Ell won the junior varsity match.
Valley has two road matches this week, including last night against Ocosta and Thursday at Naselle.
Montesano 3, South Bend 0
Host Montesano beat South Bend in three games 25-18, 25-19, 25-12 -25, 12-25 last Wednesday night.
“In this match, we really struggled keeping our momentum going when we had leads in games one and two,” South Bend head coach Jackie Sanchez told the Herald. “We struggled on serve-receive, which really hindered us in running our offense. The girls really continued to work hard throughout the match, kept a positive attitude, but didn't come home with the win. Makenzie Russell had 7 kills, Katlyn Sawyer 4 kills, and Emily Sanchez 3 kills. Sanchez and Alison Funkhouser did a good job setting for us, and Maddie Klus had a good match with 100 percent serves and 7 digs.
Lady Indians 3, Warrenton 0
The Lady Indians won their home opener 25-22, 25-11, 25-19 over Warrenton, Ore. Saturday night.
“This is always a competitive match for us each year, so it was nice to win in three games,” Coach Sanchez said. “We made some adjustments from our previous match with Monte, which improved our ball control. We had a balanced attack with Katlyn Sawyer 7 kills, Makenzie Russell 6 kills, and Emily Sanchez 5 kills with Alison Funkhouser and Sanchez setting. Morgan Patterson and Maddie Klus were solid in the back row passing and both with 100 percent serves.”
South Bend played at Northwest Christian last night, competes at the Mossyrock tournament Saturday before coming home to face Ocosta Tuesday (Sept. 24).
Hoquiam 3, Raymond 0
Hoquiam topped Raymond in three games at Seagull Gym September 11.
“Hannah Dykes led us with kills 3 and blocks 4,” RHS Head Volleyball Coach Bob Swogger told the Herald. “Ayisha (Garcia) also had 3 kills and Alex Gilbert had 8 digs. Our inexperience showed a little against Hoquiam as we missed a lot of services that we don't normally miss. We did show a lot of improvement compared to how we played at the Hoquiam Jamboree earlier in the week. If we keep working hard in practice and work on getting better as an individual and as a team we'll be fine.”
Raymond played at Pe Ell last night, hosts Ocosta Thursday, travels to Mossyrock for a tournament Saturday and hosts North Beach Tuesday (Sept. 24).
