Valley students compete at FCCLA

On July 6th, more than 7,500 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members, advisers, alumni, and guests from across the country gathered in San Antonio for the 2014 National Leadership Conference.

The conference is based on the student-originated theme “SOAR.” Chris Rondon and Marissa Hurley, 6th graders at Willapa Valley Middle School, were among the members and took part in STAR Event Competitions at the conference.

FCCLA offers over 30 Family and Consumer Sciences related events, also known as STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) events. These events include Culinary Arts, Knowledge Bowl, Career Investigation, and Fashion Construction to name a few. Members compete at the Regional, State and National level. This year, Chris and Marissa were among over 4200 STAR Event participants who competed this week in San Antonio. This is the largest number of competitors at any National STAR Events competition. Chris and Marissa competed in the FCCLA Chapter Website. Their project focused on creating a chapter website for the Willapa Valley FCCLA Chapter. The students would like to thank the community for helping them earn money to attend this trip. The students sold pies, Memorial Day crosses and received donations from Willapa Valley Booster Club, Camp One Grange, Research Club (May Tea), Kiwanis Club, American Legion, Willapa Harbor Ministerial Association, Menlo Store and Principal Nancy Morris.
