My stepmom once included, among the Christmas gifts, a wall calendar - utilitarian and inexpensive, to be sure. She penned in all the birthdays, anniversaries, upcoming graduations. Chose themes - horses for me, aviation for my uncle, local history for my dad. We learned to plan ahead, save for goals, remember others outside our self-centered child's lives.
Besides a handy reminder for appointments and school games, tossed into a trunk upstairs, these marked our personal histories - vacations, weddings, birth announcements, farewells to loved ones. That's a genealogical treasure you can't place a price on. (I lied - get yours for $20 at Timberland Bank, Hair It Is, Toledo Senior Center or the Community Library. But hurry!) And when you consider The Historical Society distributes some pretty respectable scholarships each year, it's a great investment in our next generation, a legacy and tribute to Toledo Pride.
