Hike along Sylvia Creek/Forestry Trail while learning about area logging history, wildlife and plant life. Meet at 1 p.m., at the day-use area parking lot. On-leash pets are welcome. 

“First Day Hikes are a great way for families and individuals to enjoy, appreciate and support their Washington state parks,” said Don Hoch, Washington State Parks director. “We’re thrilled to participate in this nationwide effort that encourages Americans to get outdoors from the very beginning of the New Year. This is a way that families can create a new memorable New Year’s Day tradition.”

Ranger Darrel will lead a 2.5-mile tour along Sylvia Creek on the forestry trail below the lake. There will also be a shorter stroll led by a volunteer from Friends of Schafer & Lake Sylvia (FOSLS).

In Montesano, follow 3rd Street north into Lake Sylvia State Park; turn left across the bridge and into the parking lot by the swimming area. We'll meet at the kitchen building at 12:45 p.m. We'll go whatever the weather, so dress appropriately.

There will be hot drinks and cookies provided by the FOSLS at the kitchen after the hike. Hike is free but bring your Discover Pass (or buy one there) to park. Bring cookies to shore if you'd like. Well-mannered dogs on short leashes welcome. No bikes please.
