As Independence Day approaches, the State Fire Marshal’s Office would like to remind residents of the dangers of fireworks and dry conditions.
They report a total of 128 fires and 226 injuries related to fireworks occurred in Washington in 2012. The majority took place in July 4 and included seven residential fires totaling $880,500 in losses, as well as 26 smaller fires and 64 injuries caused by illegal/modified fireworks.
Talk to your kids about fireworks and safety. Set family boundaries, such as only allowing adults to light fireworks. Store fireworks in a secure location out of the reach and sight of curious children. Have water nearby and keep pets indoors, and make sure you clean up fireworks debris.
