Winlock football ends season with victory

If only every senior could leave high school football the way Evan Mitchell did.

Mitchell ran for five touchdowns as Winlock cruised to a 49-14 non-conference victory over Chief Leschi in Puyallup on Nov. 5. Mitchell ran for 362 all-purpose yards, including two fumble recoveries that were returned for scores.

"Sad to say it's my last time representing the cardinal football family, but I'm glad I got to end it with a victory," said Mitchell. "I'm so happy to not only get the monkey off my back but also the future teams."

The "monkey" was the fact that a Winlock High School football team's last victory was during the 2010 season.

Senior Jonathon Whitney also got in on the scoring with a TD pass from Junior Quarterback Nolan Patching. Freshman Dawson Hall scored an early touchdown before the Carinals rattled off 39 straight points.

A big key to the game was the Cardinals not committing a single turnover.

The Cardinals finished their season 1-9.

Castle Rock spikers still alive

Castle Rock defeated Elma in a thrilling 25-12, 19-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-8 series and then fell to powerful Kalama in the semi-finals of the District IV 1A Volleyball Tournament in Castle Rock on Nov. 5.

Nicole Seidl stacked up 21 assists, 14 digs, 15 kills and eight blocks in the thriller. Auna Dolan contributed 11 kills and eight blocks while Brooke Hoffman had 11 kills and eight digs. Kyndil Kirkendoll entered the stat sheet with four kills and seven digs.

In the semi-finals on Wednesday, CR was swept by Kalama 25-8, 25-9, 25-10 to drop them into the consolation bracket of the tournament.

The Rockets need just one win for a trip to the WIAA State Tournament in Yakima. That win will have to come Saturday against La Center whom they have defeated twice this season.

Toledo soccer ends season with playoff loss

Toledo played their final game of soccer in the 2014 post season and came up on the losing end of a 2-1 game against Life Christian in Centralia on Nov. 4.

Down 2-0, Courtney Moore scored like she has so many times before this season, but the Lady Indians could muster no more goals.

"It was a great way to finish with a strong showing in playoffs to 1st place team," said Toledo Head Coach Horst Malnaut, who was certainly proud of his team after a slow start to the season.
