Shirley was born to the late Mary (Wiss) and Ignace Balcunas on March 30th, 1931 in Raymond, Wash. She graduated from Willapa Valley High School in 1947. Shirley received her RN degree at St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Tacoma in 1952.
Shirley married the love of her life, Martin L. Johnson and together they built a loving home for their family. During her nursing career she worked at several hospitals in Washington. Then after moving to Carlotta, Calif. to run Martin and Shirley’s market, she worked at Redwood Memorial Hospital and General Hospital. When Martin suddenly passed away, Shirley quit nursing to keep their young family together by continuing to operate the market. Hard work and compassion were a big part of her life. Her door was always open to anyone in need. Many people benefited from her generosity. Watching her children and grandchildren participate in sports was one of the highlights of her life.
