SOUTH BEND – Raymond stormed past its rival at the windy, rainy Don Weisel Oval in South Bend during Thursday’s Tri-District Meet before a crowd of about 275. The Seagulls of head coach Mike Tully tabulated 110 points, which almost doubled the total output of Willapa Valley (40) and South Bend (25).
By gathering 62 points in the girls’ portion of the meet, Raymond walked away with its second straight Henrie-Weisel Trophy, which was named in honor and memory of Willapa Harbor coaches Jim Henrie and Don Weisel two years ago. Raymond’s teams amassed 172 points, followed by Valley, 91, and South Bend, 88.
“We had a very successful tri-district meet,” Raymond HS Head Track and Field Head Coach Mike Tully told the Herald. “A combination of first-place punch and depth on both sides allowed us to retain the Henrie-Weisel Trophy for another year.
“We had a number of good performances despite the rain and wind,” Tully said. “Rayce Newman took the 100/200 sprint double, Ally Phansisay leaped to victory in both horizontal jumps, Andrew Hamilton swept the shot and disc, and Alex Vaca took home three first-place finishes in the 800, 1600, and high jump. The boys also captured both relays.
“Overall, it was a great team effort and gives us a lot of positives to build on as we get into the second half of the season,” Tully added.
Raymond’s Rayce Newman won both sprints with times of :11.60 in the 100 and :24.40 in the 200. Valley’s Cody Buchanan was second in both races with times of :11.70 and :25.10. Raymond took third in both races with Alex Sida (100) and Darol Ratsavongsy (200).
Raymond freshman Elliott Murdock won the 400 meters with a time of :57.20 and South Bend’s Cohen was second at :59.30.
In the 800 meters, Raymond’s Alex Vaca (2:26 flat) won by four seconds over South Bend’s Jose Bucio. Vaca was also a winner in the 1600 meters with a clocking of 5:41.10. Teammate Raymond Glover was a distant second at 5:46.70, and Bucio was third at 5:48.90.
Vaca won his third event of the day by being the only athlete to register a height in the high jump at 5 feet.
Raymond’s Erik Monson ran away from the other three runners (all teammates) in the 3200 meters with a time of 14:14.20.
Hunter Borden of RHS took first place in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of :16.70, followed by Valley’s David Rockett and Raymond’s Terry Broten, both in at :17.30.
Rockett beat Borden in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles by 1.2 seconds. Rockett posted a time of :45.40. Raymond’s Ally Phansisay was third.
Rockett easily won the pole vault at 12 feet. The other three competitors were from Valley and were at leas 2½ feet away from Rockett. Rockett won the state in the pole vault last season.
Raymond won the 400 relay with a time of :47.20 with runners Phansisay, Ratsavongsy, Sida and Newman. Valley was second at :48.10 with Drew Pearson, Don Carlson, Seth Flemetis and Buchanan. South Bend was 1.7 seconds behind Valley.
