About Veterans Day: first, it is only one of four official US holidays that fall on a specific date, Nov. 11. The others are the 4th of July, Christmas Day and New Years Day. Most of us in Ryderwood remember when the other holidays didn't fall on the closest Monday.
Second, the "11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918" was the date and time chosen for the Armistice that ended World War I. Veterans Day was designated a national holiday a year later by Woodrow Wilson. The holiday celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day remembers the men and women who died while serving.
This is the week for the ladies' to do their socializing. The Women's Club luncheon meets Wednesday at noon and the Red Hat ladies gather the next day at 2 p.m. Both groups meet at Pioneer Hall.
By the way, the Line Dancing group meets in the Auditorium on Thursday afternoons at 4 p.m. They dance to videos played on the newer TV.
Saturday evening is the next Town Potluck and Social Club Meeting. Bring along a dish to share and enjoy one of the best meals you'll have all month. That, of course, doesn't count the prepared dinners and lunches served at the Café and at Senior Nutrition.
Friday night's dinner at the Café will be Russ' Chicken-Fried Steak. The meals are served at 5 p.m. and are always all-inclusive from beverage and salad to dessert. Call Linda at (360) 295-0875 by Wednesday to make reservations. The price per meal is $9 with all proceeds supporting the Café. This would not be possible without the all-volunteer staff.
Don't forget burgers and soup at the Café on Mondays from 4 to 6 p.m. They are the best around and the price is right. This coming Monday, Nov. 17, will also be Karaoke starting at 6:30 p.m. Come out and enjoy the fun!
Have a great week!
