Four wrestlers from South Bend and Raymond went to Tacoma to participate in the 2015 Mat Classic XXVII.
Raymond was able to rank 19 out of 38 teams participating and South Bend was 32nd. A pair of fourth-place state finishes were grabbed by Raymond wrestlers Matthew Boyes and Shiloh Borden to move the Seagulls up in the rankings.
Boyes had to work through four matches during his time at the state tournament beating his initial 195-pound opponent Frank Holfelz of Tonasket. Boyes was able to win by fall at 1:33 of the match. Advancing, Boyes next fell to Cody Hoffman of Selkirk by fall at 1:05. The Seagull rebounded by pinning Brian DeYoung of Colfax with a time of the clock of 2:48. His final bout to sort out the third and fourth-place medals was against Alex Bell of Ilwaco. Bell took a narrow decision over Boyes, 4-3. Boyes finished fourth in State at the 195-weight class.
The other Raymond medal winner, Borden, was working at the 170-pound weight and had as many bouts during his time at the Classic. Dropping his first bout by a 18-13 decision, Borden won his next two matches both by decisions over Donald Olmstead of Concrete and Luke Peebles of Kittitas. Borden drew Nick James of Davenport in his final match and took an 8-2 loss, but finished fourth in State at the 170-pound weight class.
Two South Bend wrestlers, senior Marcos Perales, working the 285-pound division, and freshman Karson Isaken, at the other end at 106-pounds, had four bouts between them. Perales faced Lane Monteith of Darrington and took a loss by a 3-1 decision in his final appearance and Isaken was taken by pin from Gilbert Martinez of Mabton.
