The Lewis County Sheriff's Office is gearing up for a favorite annual tradition; Shop With a Cop. This holiday season marks the 14th year of this fun-filled evening for deputies, corrections officers, and children from Lewis County.
On December 17th, deputies and corrections officers will take approximately 33 children to the Chehalis Wal-Mart to shop for Christmas presents. When finished shopping, children will ride back to the Sheriff's Office to wrap their presents, eat pizza (donated by Papa Pete's), and play bingo for some great prizes.
The Sheriff's Office partners with United Way of Lewis County to find children in need of a positive experience with law enforcement, as well as those in need of financial assistance.
"Deputies and corrections officer's love being involved in this program.
The excitement, from both the kids and officers, is palpable throughout the event. It is just a really fun evening. Everyone really gets into the spirit and reason for the holiday season", said Chief Brown.
Our deputies and corrections officers are happy to participate in the program, with many being involved since the start. The children are always grateful for the opportunity to shop for presents for their family and themselves. Often these children are more concerned with taking care of their family members than themselves.
The program is open to children ages 8 to 18 who reside in Lewis County. Applications are now available from the United Way Website at www.lewiscountyuw.com, their office at 450 NW Pacific Avenue, Chehalis, or by calling the United Way office at 748-8100. Applications are also available at the front counter of the Sheriff's Office or on our Facebook Page.
Counselors, neighbors, social workers, church leaders, parents, teachers, and other community members are encouraged to nominate children they feel would benefit from the program. United Way seeks applicants with both financial need and a need for positive interaction with a police officer. The deadline to submit applications is November 24th.
Donations to sustain the program are greatly appreciated and can be sent to LCSOA, Attn. Chief Brown, 345 W. Main St, Chehalis, WA 98532.
