“I really didn't think we had the depth to win it and it was a pleasant surprise; I wasn't expecting it,” Valley head coach Dave Ege told the Herald. “We only had two individual winners on the girls side. Michaela Huber in the pole vault PV with a career best of 10 feet, and Jessica Cook in the 1600 meters, also with a career best of 6:04.39.
“David Rockett was a double winner in the 300-meter hurdles and pole vault, equaling his personal best of 13 feet. It was good weather and we had good performances all around.
”The Shelton weather was a different story; it was showers, windy and cold,” Coach Ege said. “I guess you could say our normal weather for track in western Washington.
”David Rocket took fourth at 12-6, as did Michaela Huber on the girls side at 9-6,” Ege said. “Other top eight placers were Lauren Friese (PV, 6th, 9-0) and Katrina Ege (7th, discus, 93-2).
“Anthony Sagen, although not placing, probably had the performance of the day,” Coach Ege noted. “He vaulted 12 feet, which is his PR. Doing that in
the weather we had was a pretty good accomplishment.”
“We had an excellent week at the Naselle and Shelton Invites,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully told the Herald. “The boys team had an exceptional meet in winning at Naselle. They were led by Rayce Newman, who was named the Male Athlete of the Meet for his wins in the 100, 200, and 4 by 100 relay. Ally Phansisay had a good day in winning the triple jump. Alex Vaca picked up top three finishes in both the 800 and 1600. Andrew Hamilton also had a pair of top three finishes and new PRs in the shot and disc.
“The girls team also competed well at Naselle,” Coach Tully reported. “Courtney Hagain continued her great running, out-sprinting Katie Green from Naselle down the stretch in the 3200. Hannah Dykes had a trio of top three’s 3's in the horizontal jumps and 100. The 4 by 400 team ran very well to pick up a win. Overall, it was good competition for us as we head into the last week of the regular season.
“We had a good meet at the Shelton Invite on Saturday,” Tully said. “Aiysha Garcia had a PR of 33-3 to win the frosh/soph shot put. Aiysha is really starting to throw well and stepped up in a big meet. Ally Phansisay struggled all day with his mark, but still managed a third-place finish, just two inches behind the winner. Andrew Hamilton also brought home a medal with a sixth-place finish in the shot put in a new PR of 45-10.5.”
Raymond hosts a six-team meet Thursday, including Willapa Valley, while South Bend heads to North Beach.
