SEAGULL GYM – The Raymond Lady Seagulls continued their unbeaten buzz saw through the Pacific League with a devastation of South Bend last Tuesday (Jan. 14), but the Raymond boys suffered their first league loss at the hands of North Beach Saturday at Oyehut.
Led by Abby Maneman’s 18 points and three more players in double figures, Raymond (14-1) annihilated South Bend on its own gym, 68-20. The Lady Seagulls held the Tribe to three points in the first quarter and one in the fourth quarter. It was Raymond’s 14th straight victory and eighth without a loss in the Pacific League. South Bend slipped to 7-8 overall and 5-3 in league games.
Hailee Williams drilled in 13 points, Aiysha Garcia came up with a dozen and Courtney Hagain netted 11 for RHS.
“We went man tonight defense the whole night, dug in our heels and went after it,” Raymond head coach Jon Schray said.
“Raymond defiantly brought (its) A game and we didn’t respond,” South Bend head coach Gary Wilson told the Herald. “Raymond is playing very well right now and we just did not have an answer for anything they threw at us. They kept a lot of pressure on. They took us out of the game in the first two minutes and we didn’t respond at all. We didn’t come to play.”
Host North Beach (9-7, 6-4) upset seventh ranked (A.P.) 36-34 Saturday night in the “House of Pain” at Oyehut in a Pacific League game.
Raymond (13-4, 8-1) led 13-7 after one quarter, 19-14 at halftime and 29-26 heading into the fourth quarter. The Hyaks won the fourth quarter 10-5 to come away with the victory after Raymond missed a tying shot in the waning seconds.
“This may have been our worst game of the season,” Raymond HS Head Boys’ Basketball Coach Mike Tully told the Herald. “We got out to an early lead, but we allowed North Beach to keep hanging around. We could never mount a run and really pull away. North Beach is a tough place to play, and they showed why.
“I thought we played pretty well defensively on their shooters, not allowing them too many good looks; however, we struggled defending their post player, Justin Chong,” Tully said.
“On the offensive end, we could never get into any sort of rhythm or flow,” Tully said. “We really struggled with our shooting, and I think that frustration crept into the rest of our game. Hopefully, we can get things turned around and finish out the regular season strong.”
Andrew Hamilton hauled in 12 rebounds, scored eight points and made four steals, Darol Ratsavongsy pulled in 10 rebounds and Marvin So scored eight.
Both teams shot poorly at the foul line; the Gulls were 6 of 13 and NB was 6 of 17.

Raymond (34): So 8, Bisbee 6, Murdock 0, Sida 4, J. Hamilton 0, Ratsavongsy 5, A. Hamilton 8. FG - 13/57, FT - 6/13.

Raymond massacred South Bend 69-18 before a crowd of about 175 Thursday night at Seagull Gym. Carte Bisbee pumped in a game-high 13 points for the Seagulls (13-3 and 8-0).
Coach Tully didn’t like the way his team was playing in the early going; the Seagulls were ahead 10-6, so he called a time out and gave his team an earful. The young men responded by going on a 33-3 run for a 43-9 lead. The Gulls then went on a 12-2 burst to lead 55-11. Tully played the second string the entire fourth quarter and they won the frame 16-7.
“We continued our trend of slow starts against South Bend,” Coach Tully told the Herald. “After leading only 10-6 at the end of the first quarter, we finally kicked our offense and defense into gear and took off on a big run. It was a good game to get everyone some playing time and try some different things. Carte Bisbee finished with 13 points and 6 steals. Rayce Newman finished with 11 points and 4 steals. Darol Ratsavongsy had 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.
South Bend was its own worst enemy with 34 turnovers, according to the RHS scorekeeper.
Ratsavongsy rammed in 12 points, Rayce Newman netted 11 points and So scored seven for RHS and Austin Lewis put in seven for SBHS.

Matt Jensen drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to defeat Raymond 55-52 last Monday (Jan. 14) at Seagull gym. It was Jensen’s only points in the game. After a furious rally, Raymond tied the game at the 1:08 mark on a hoop by Andrew Hamilton. The Gulls entered the fourth quarter trailing 47-31. Montesano led 20-15 after the first quarter and 33-21 at halftime.
“We really struggled through the first three quarters against Montesano,” Tully told the Herald. “Our shots weren’t falling, and we seemed a step slow on defense. We were able to turn it around in the fourth quarter and come from 16 down to tie it up at 52 with 1:08 left in the game. After both teams had a couple ugly possessions, Matthew Jensen from Montesano banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
“Andrew Hamilton and Darol Ratsavongsy keyed our comeback with Andrew scoring 10 and Darol eight in the fourth quarter,” Tully said. “For the game, Andrew finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals and five blocks. Darol finished with 16 points and three steals.”
Scoring Courtesy of Coach Tully:
Montesano (55): Ibabao 0, Rogers 3, Ohashi 5, Roy 22, Smith 5, Nelson 0, Bruner 16, Jensen 3. FG - 22/47, FT - 8/14.
Raymond (52): So 4, Bisbee 9, Newman 4, Murdock 3, Sida 1, J. Hamilton 0, Ratsavongsy 16, A. Hamilton 16. FG - 23/76, FT - 2/6.
Bisbee added nine points. Elliott Murdock and Hamilton led the Seagulls off the glass with seven rebounds apiece. Bisbee and Murdock had five steals each and Bisbee handed out four assists.
The Bulldogs (9-5) shot better than RHS from the floor and foul line. Monte was 22 of 51 (43%) compared to 23 of 76 (30%) for the Gulls. Raymond made only 2 of 6 free throws, while MHS was 8 of 14.
Raymond committed a dozen turnovers.
Naselle visited Raymond Tuesday night; the Gulls host Northwest Christian Friday and venture to Willapa Valley Tuesday (Jan. 29).
Lady Seagulls 62, North Beach 31
Maneman continued her powerful play with 21 points, six rebounds and three assists as Raymond tore apart North Beach 62-31 Friday night at Seagull Gym for its 15th straight victory.
Hagain popped in a dozen points, grabbed five boards and stole the ball four times and Shylo Boyes came up with nine points and five rebounds.
Raymond played the game without Williams (one of the Gulls’ top players), who was out with an illness.
Raymond visited Tenino Monday night, hosts Naselle Thursday and travels to Lacey to take on Northwest Christian Saturday.
Lady Indians 58, Ocosta 36
South Bend blew out Ocosta 58-36 Friday night at Koplitz Field House behind 18 points by Makenzie Russell and 17 by Sierra Cearns.
“We started slow and they (the Wildcats) played hard, giving it everything they had,” Wilson told the Herald. “We began playing stronger defense and made some open shots.”
Katlyn Sawyer and Miranda Curtis both collected 10 rebounds and seven points. Sawyer also made six steals and handed out five assists.
Russell also pulled down eight rebounds and Cearns dished out five assists.
The Lady Indians evened their record to 8-8, while OHS sank to 2-15. South Bend is 6-3 in the Pacific League, while the Lady Wildcats are 0-10.
Montesano 53, Lady Indians 43
Shorthanded South Bend dropped a 53-43 decision to visiting Montesano Saturday night. Sawyer sank 17 points and snared 14 rebounds and Curtis canned 13 points and tore down 10 boards for the Lady Indians (8-9).
One of South Bend’s best players, Russell, did not suit up because of an illness.
“It was a close game and I’m proud of the kids,” Wilson told the Herald. “We’ve been shorthanded over the last couple of weeks. We fought hard and played hard tonight.”
The Lady Bulldogs (10-6) led 7-6 after one quarter, 24-21 at halftime and 40-35 after three stops.
Also scoring for SBHS were Cearns (7) and Kessa Wilson (6).
South Bend visits North Beach Thursday and hosts rival Willapa Valley Saturday. No Related Articles |
