Castle Rock senior Mason Klingberg (center) pulls down a rebound against Riverside Christian during the Wilbur Ellis Shootout at the Yakima Sundome on Jan. 11. Klingberg has singled himself out not only as a versatile athlete but an accomplished academic, as well.

For the last two years, Castle Rock sport fans could barely think about high school athletics and not conjure images of Mason Klingberg.

He has been the football quarterback, basketball big man and baseball star for the Rockets for at least two years. Not many Rocket plays have happened during that time without him being involved.

Now in the middle of his senior basketball season, Klingberg is a key cog on a team that is chasing the small-but-competitive Trico League crown.

"We are winning the games we should and coming close to beating better teams," said Klingberg of the Rockets '14-'15 basketball campaign. Castle Rock is currently 9-4 on the season and 5-3 in league play and are currently in 3rd place in the league.

"I hope to go far into playoffs and make it to state," he continued.

Klingberg is on a team heavily impacted by one family this year. His coach of course is Kevin Johnson, and two of the CR guards include two of the coaches' sons Ty and Brock Johnson.

"I enjoy playing with Ty and Brock. They are good ball players and are a huge impact in our success," smiles Klingberg. "Kevin Johnson gets us ready for each game by getting us prepared and ready to go. Every guy on the team has their role and continues to shine more and more further into the season."

Should the sport fans think that Klingberg's life is just playing sports, they should think again. He has an active lifestyle with plenty of activities unrelated to his chosen sports. "I have hobbies of fishing, hunting, snowboarding, riding quads," he said, "and I am always on the hunt for some new shoes like retro Jordan's, Lebrons, KD's (Kevin Durant) and Kobe's (Kobe Bryant)."

Klingberg is well-positioned for the future, however, with post-high school plans and a grade point average that makes a librarian envious.

"I have a accumulative GPA of a 3.86," details Klingberg. "My plan is to go to Washington State and enter their engineering program."

In the meantime, Klingberg is looking to have more exciting moments during this basketball season that equal or better some of his greatest athletic memories.

Some of his most memorable moments include beating La Center at the horn and in the play off when his team hit a buzzer beater. He is also very proud of making the football playoffs during his junior and sophomore years.

"My favorite sport is between football and basketball," says Klingberg. "I couldn't choose a favorite between those two."

It doesn't matter which sport he plays though, he has quite a fan base.

"My family is a huge supporter and is always at my games," he says, stating his rooting section goes beyond his immediate family. "[It includes] family friends, friends and people I have met throughout the years."

It may be his senior year, but basketball is not the last sport of Mason Klingberg's high school career. Currently, though, it is garnering most of his focus.
