October looks to be a pretty busy month.
But what about September?
If you’re looking for something to do on the second Saturday (September 14th), then I’ve got something for you. Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinic, in Ilwaco, is doing the annual Health Fair Extravaganza Extraordinaire! (OK, I added the last two words, but still.)
Starting at 8 a.m., and running to 1, the free event offers information, face-to-face contacts and a great opportunity to see what’s happening in our community.
Health checks, such as blood pressure, diabetes screening, cholesterol, etc., will be available from 8-10 at the clinic across from the hospital. Speakers will be presenting various topics relating to healthy living, treatments, and so on, beginning at 10:30 in the Ocean Beach Hospital conference room.
In addition to the “medical” stuff, there will be a lot of folks from various agencies in the county, ready to answer questions, provide information and/or just plain have a conversation. A partial list includes Fires District #1, Peninsula Pharmacies, Crisis Support Network, DaVita Dialysis, and O3A/I & A (us).
Yep, we’ll be participating again this year, bringing information on Family Caregiver Support Programs, Medicare and other insurance issues — through our SHIBA (Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors) staff — and even talking a bit about the new Washington Health Benefits Exchange. (You may recall from previous columns that this has to do with the unfolding Affordable Care Act and the “everyone has to have insurance” piece.) In addition, we’ll have lots of other information and be there to chat…and listen!
These events are a great place to put names to faces, ask questions in a relaxed atmosphere, and simply meander through the many displays, tables and community partners. And, if you’re anything like me, meandering is a popular pastime!
