Business section in Frances Burned.
Friday night Frances had the second disastrous fire within the last week when the stores of the Frances Mercantile Co., the two buildings of C. C. Bower and the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. Tozier were burned. The fire was caused from the lamp being overturned by a couple of cats in the Frances Mercantile Store. In falling the lamp broke and scattered oil and flames in all directions and into the oil room nearby. The flames spread rapidly and nothing could be saved. The clerks had all gone home and Mr. Kaasa who is proprietor of the store was preparing to go home with his wife when the accident occurred. The flames spread to the building owned by Mr. Bowers, the lower part of which was used as a grain room by the F. F. Smith grocery store, and the second story being occupied by Mr. Bowers and his family and from there to the second building owned by Mr. Bowers and occupied by the Smith grocery store.

Whale ashore at Long Beach.
Reports from Long Beach state that a large whale washed up on the beach last Sunday, and is proving a point of attraction for the many summer resort visitors. The presence of one of these leviathans of the deep always attracts much interest and curiosity on the part of people who have never had an opportunity to view a whale at close range, and no doubt many people from Raymond and South Bend will want to take advantage of the opportunity and make a trip to the beach next Sunday to see it.

August 5, 1965

Drowned Boy's body found in Willapa Bay.
The body of Daniel F. Koenig, 17 year old Ocosta youth who drowned July 1 while he was surf boarding off Grayland beaches, was found late Monday by Jim Kuhn from Raymond near Buoy 18 in Willapa Bay.

Kuhn sighted the floating body while he was salmon fishing. Willapa Bay coast guardsmen brought the body to the dock at Tokeland. It was then taken to the Murphy Mortuary in Raymond.

Horse Pilots can be cited says Lunsford.
Young men and women are riding horses through Raymond's downtown streets in increasing numbers and this is a source of no little concern to the police department.

Police Chief Dan Lunsford says the riders of horses are in some cases impeding traffic. This is illegal and they can be cited for it.

Fourth muster planned in Raymond.
A firefighter spraying down a spotted owl is the logo for the fourth annual Raymond Firemens Muster, at the Mayr Bros Sorting Yard.

T shirts and buttons to be sold at this year's muster depict a Raymond firefighter using a fire hose to spray the famous bird out of a tree. The picture was drawn by local artist Steve Flemetis.

The festivities will begin Friday morning with the second annual "Hog and Grog" Golf Tournament at the Willapa Harbor Golf Course.

Registration for the muster will begin at noon when the fairgrounds at the Muster Site open.

Sheriff candidates talk to Kiwanis.
Sheriff hopefuls Jerry Benning and Jerry Ashley listed causes of rising crime in Kiwanis talks last Wednesday.

Benning, who is seeking a second term as sheriff, said crime has jumped most at the Peninsula and seems tourist related.

Ashley, speaking only of South Bend, where he's been police chief for 23 years, cited waved of newcomers to the area.
