Plan water fight for July Fourth

Plans for the Fourth of July celebration under the auspices of the Fire Department are daily materializing, and give promise of developing into the biggest and best celebration ever held in the county. All roads will lead to Raymond on Monday, July 5, and there will be sport and amusement in plenty for everybody.

Among the special features planned by the fire boys is a unique stunt the sport line- a water fight. This will be participated in by two picked teams, each of which will be equipped with lines of hose attached to two water hydrants, to be used as weapons of defense and offense. The conflict will begin with the opposing forces stationed a certain distance apart.

New trial denied

At 1:30 pm yesterday afternoon Judge Alston heard argument for a new trial for P.T. Johnson, who was found guilty last Friday of making a false statement to the state bank examiner. F.M. Bond, attorney for Johnson, contended that the information charging the offense was insufficient, and that the court had refused one instruction to the jury which he claimed was very material. Both were overruled, and the court announced that sentence would be pronounced next Monday morning.

South Bend School board to call for new building

South Bend School District 118 directors decided at a board meeting last Thursday night to call for construction of a new $558,000 plant to replace the high school structure damaged by a costly fire on April 23.

Board chairman Robert Gewig said the decision was reached after many meetings and studying all possible alternatives.

Essentially, the school board had three choices. It could take the approximately $70,000 in insurance money and fix the high school to the condition it was in just before the fire; it could remodel the old building to the condition the state fire marshal, educational advisers and the school board believe is necessary; or it could start over and build a new school from the ground up.

Lions Club ready for hungry people

In honor of Father's Day the Willapa Harbor Lion's Club is this year inaugurating a benefit breakfast which will be repeated annually in Raymond. This years affair is being held at the Raymond high school cafeteria.

Co-chairmen for the event are Bob Tyndell and Harry James. The have assured that there will be plenty of food, service and seating capacity to accommodate any size crowd.

Rail service end seen

Ninety seven years of rail service to the Willapa Harbor area will probably end soon. The 56 mile route to Chehalis will be marked for abandonment on a Burlington Northern map to be filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission this month, a BN spokesman in Seattle said Tuesday.

That means the railroad intends within the next year to start legal proceedings which could lead to pulling up the tracks, according to Howard Kallio of the BN public relations department.

The move would come as a consequence of reduced lumber shipments by the branch line's only freight customer, Weyerhaeuser Company.

Plan body says no to SB zone change

Don't mess with downtown zoning in South Bend! That's the message the planning commission got from citizens June 4, and passed along to the city council.

The commission recommended denial of any downtown zone change forbidding first story residential or non-commercial uses.
