Raymond to have fine new theater

Manager George Reizner, of the New Lyric Theatre, has completed negotiations within the last week which assure to Raymond a modern and commodious playhouse, which will fill a want that has long been felt by the people of this city.

Mr. Reizner has taken a lease of the east half of the new concrete building to be erected at Duryea and Second Streets by L. V. Raymond, work on the foundation of which is already well under way. This half of the building, which will front on Duryea, is now 60 x 120 feet, and will be equipped in accordance with the best ideas in theater architecture. With the lower floor, balcony and gallery, the house will have a seating capacity of 900 or 100 people, and will be equipped with upholstered opera chairs of the most modern and comfortable type.

Surfacing Pluvius Hill road

Road Supervisor J. A. Dickey has begun putting fine rock on the Pluvius hill road, and it will soon be in fine shape for travel. The commissioners had not thought it possible to do this work this year, but unexpectedly a nice balance was found to exist in road district No. 13, and Commissioner Stratton was not slow in getting action on a piece of road which will be used a great deal this summer, and which has been a source of dread to the auto owner because of the hard wear it caused to tires. The road was around Channel Change, which was rocked earlier this spring, has been treated with a layer of fine rock, and is now excellent condition for travel.

Vandals busy over weekend

Though the Memorial Day holiday was free of auto accidents of other than minor nature, sheriff's deputies were kept busy on cases of vandalism and theft. The South Bend high school building sustained about $250 Sunday night when vandals broke 22 windows . South Bend Police Chief Eugene Barnum is investigating.

Haerling gets jail sentence and $110

Frank H. Haerling, 21, Raymond, was sentenced by Police Judge Arthur E. Sherman, Jr. to 20 days in jail and was fined $110 on a charge of driving while his license was suspended when he appeared in court Wednesday evening. Sherman found James H. Tiner, Raymond, guilty of a charge of leaving the scene on an accident on June 1. Tiner had been charged with driving into a house owned by Pete Lapinski on Park Ave. on May 25. He was arrested after city police followed a trail of broken glass. Tiner was fined $110 by Sherman and will pay the nearly $500 damages to the house.

Rail service end seen

Ninety-seven years of rail service to the Willapa Harbor area will probably end soon. The 56 mile route to Chehalis will be marked for abandonment on a Burlington Northern map to be filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission this month, a BN spokesman in Seattle said Tuesday.

That means the railroad intends within the next year to start legal proceedings which could lead to pulling up the tracks, according to Howard Kallio of the BN public relations department.

The move would come as a consequence of reduced lumber shipments by the branch line's only freight customer, Weyerhaeuser Company.

Plan body says no to SB zone change

Don't mess with downtown zoning in South Bend! That's the message the planning commission got from citizens June 4, and passed along to the city council.

The commission recommended denial of any downtown zone change forbidding firt story residential or none commercial uses.
