First Day Hikes at WA State Parks

January 1 is also a Washington State Parks "Free Day," so visiting a State Park does not require a Discover Pass. Check out these hikes scheduled for some local State Parks.

Becon Rock State Park

Kick off the New Year by joining State Park staff and friends on a moderate 2-mile hike to the top of Beacon Rock and back. Ring in 2015 by connecting with nature and enjoying the beautiful views of the Columbia River Gorge. Hikers need to bring sturdy footwear, weather appropriate clothing, water and snacks. Meet at 10 am at the Beacon Rock Trailhead near the picnic shelter. Pets are not recommended on this hike. Call 509-427-8265 for cancellation information.

Cape Disappointment State Park

The dramatic view overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Columbia River from Cape Disappointment State Park is hard to beat! This First Day Hike will focus on a historical tour of North Head and Bell's View, with excellent views of the river, the ocean, coastal headlands and fog-enshrouded forests. The total length of the trail is 1 mile and consider an easy hike. Meet at the Lighthouse Keeper's Loop Trail at North Head at 2 pm. Interpretive staff will be stationed at the trailhead. Dress appropriately for winter, coastal weather. The trail consists of gravel, historic concrete and asphalt paving so were sturdy footwear. Bring water and binoculars. Pets are welcome if on a leash. The North Head Lighthouse will not be available for tours during the hike. Lake Sylvia State Park

Lake Sylvia State Park in Montesano is a perfect place for lowland hiking anytime during the winter. This hike is set by an idyllic lake and old-growth forests. The 2.5-mile moderate hike is along the Sylvia Creek/Forestry Trail. Learn about the history of the Lake Sylvia area and discuss common plant and animal wildlife. Cocoa and cookies will be provided by the Friends of Schafer and Lake Sylvia. Hikers need to meet in the Lake Sylvia day use parking lot at 1 pm. Bring water, warm clothing, good hiking shoes and umbrella. Pets are welcome on a leash. Call 360-249-3621 for cancellation information.

Westport Light State Park

Sometimes winter can be the best time of year to visit the ocean. The Westport Light State Park is hosting an easy 2.6-mile hike guided by a ranger who will talk about the history of the area and provide some insight into the dynamic coastline. Travel to Point Chehalis and take in the sweeping views of Twin Harbors Beach and the Pacific Ocean. Children of all ages are welcome to join. Meet at the park bulleting board at 10 am. Wear appropriate winter clothing and bring water. Pets are welcome if on a leash. Call 360-267-4301 for cancellation information.
