Diabetes prevention class being offered

Providence Centralia Hospital Diabetes and Nutrition Center and the Providence Boldt Diabetes Center are accepting applications for a 16-week program starting Sept. 11 to help those at risk for diabetes to avoid or delay developing the disease.

"Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastest growing diagnosis in the U.S. and in our area," said Linda Gooding, Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator from the Providence Boldt Diabetes Center. "This class will help those at risk for Type 2 diabetes lose weight through healthy eating and physical activity."

The program is funded by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, in partnership with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. There will be a small fee for the series of classes, which will take place at the Providence Professional Center, 1010 S. Scheuber Road in Centralia.

"We look forward to working with the people in Lewis County who are ready to adapt a healthier lifestyle to avoid or delay getting diabetes," said Linda Vanhook-Briganti of the Diabetes Center.

Those who qualify should: have a fasting blood sugar of 100-125; or have risk factors for Type 2 diabetes (such as family history); and have a Body Mass Index of 24 or higher.

The series of classes will begin Sept. 11 and will meet on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for 16 weeks, followed by six monthly follow-up meetings.

Classes will be taught by trained lifestyle coaches and include subjects such as: nutrition, physical activity, stress reduction, lifestyle changes.
