Biosolids bill to add more scrutiny

During the past year, individuals in Toledo and Winlock have been meeting to discuss biosolids, also known as sewer sludge. The group known as Toledo Citizens Against Biosludge have been working with Senator Jeff Wilson, 19th District Rep., who wrote Senate Bill 5245 to add scrutiny and public information regarding the issue of biosolids and PFAS chemicals. During the past year they have met with specialists in the biosolids and are looking at ways to make it either safer to use or to incinerate it.

Winlock School District has a budget shortfall

On Wednesday evening, several parents, teachers, students and community members attended the Winlock School District Board Meeting. The number one topic during public comment was the reduction of Behavioral Specialist staff who work directly with students who have mental health issues. The school currently employs "Certified Counselors" in each school, but they do not have the time to handle all the issues plaguing our students today. They are looking to reduce staff by five employees, three of which are behavioral specialists.

Julie Solem appointed the new Raymond Postmaster

Julie Solem has been with the Postal Service for 14 years and in that time she has been a mail carrier, clerk, and supervisor of customer support. For the last five years she was officer in charge (OIC) in Westport, Toledo, and Winlock. Now she assumes her newest role as Postmaster in Raymond.

Matlock named new RPD Chief

Former Pacific County Chief Criminal Deputy Pat Matlock was named the next Raymond Police Chief. The action took place last Monday (Feb. 6) at the Raymond City Council meeting when the council voted him as the new chief. Matlock replaces longtime RPD Chief Chuck Spoor, who is retiring. Matlock takes over as chief March 1.
