Gov. Jay Inslee visited Washington State Department of Natural Resources hand crews completing a practical exam last Tuesday (June 28). The exam brought the crews one step closer to attaining their "Red Cards" certifying them as wildlands firefighters.
"Don't be the spark," said DNR's Wildfire Communications Manager Thomas Kyle-Milward. "Roughly 90 percent of wildfires are human-caused. Take care when you're out recreating in natural spaces."
Once the weather heats up and fuels dry out, so begins another wildfire season. DNR provides wildfire prevention reminders including checking for burn restrictions before starting campfires, not parking hot vehicles in dry grassy areas, and using nylon or plastic weed whackers instead of metal ones.
Big Nick's Pizza is now open again after being shut down for storm damage repairs since the beginning of the year. The restaurant is offering its full menu, plus some new items. Big Nick's has received a fresh update, so stop by and have a look along with something to eat.
"We just slowly opened yesterday (June 29) and we are just letting it flow through the weekend," said Big Nick's Owner Nick Delin.
SOUTH BEND - Raymond HS has hired Julie Jewel as its new varsity head volleyball coach. Jewel replaces departed head coach Bob Swogger, who was at the helm for nine years.
"I'm excited for this opportunity," Jewell told the Herald Friday afternoon. "Raymond has had a strong volleyball program and had a lot of success last year. With the current athletes in the program, there is a strong foundation for continued success. The returning players are good competitors and have great attitudes. There is great community support for the program. It is a great opportunity."
Raymond HS Athletic Director Mike Tully offered his comments to the Herald about the hiring of Jewell.
