Coronavirus surge hits the Evergreen State

There were 814 new cases of COVID-19 in Washington as of Saturday night, raising the state total to 108,315 confirmed cases since the pandemic began in March, according to updated numbers released by the state Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday afternoon. There were a total of 2,366 deaths in Washington through late afternoon Sunday.

Through Friday, 9:00 p.m., Washington had put up its highest increase in daily coronavirus cases since mid-July. State health officials, after confirming 1,016 new COVID-19 infections on Friday, declared, "The surge has arrived."

Pacific County had 119 confirmed cases, Grays Harbor County, 722, including 11 deaths; Lewis County, 744, and 12 deaths; and Wahkiakum County, only 10 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The DOH confirmed 928 new COVID-19 cases in the state Friday afternoon. DOH reported that 8,571 people have been hospitalized in the state due to the virus, and a total of 2,450,122 COVID-19 tests have been administered as of Friday night.

There were a total of 106,573 cases of COVID-19, and 2,366 deaths statewide as of 4 pm Thursday.

Halloween visits Willapa Harbor Care Center

The weather stayed sunny for Halloween which kept little ghouls and goblins out and about. The Willapa Harbor Care Center in Raymond on October 31 hosted a socially-distanced, masked costume parade for the children of the care center staff members' children.

Accompanied by their parents, who are also care center staff members, costumed youngsters entertained care center residents. The children strolled around the outside of the facility so the care center residents could watch from their windows

Schray new head coach for Indians

SOUTH BEND - South Bend HS Athletic Director Jon Schray has taken over as head boys basketball coach for the Indians. Schray had successful seasons as the head coach of the Raymond HS girls basketball team. Schray informed the Herald of the decision to take the position Friday afternoon during a phone interview.

"My decision to take over the Boy's program was not an easy one," Schray said. "The reason I stepped down as head coach of the Raymond girl's program was all about my family at home.
