Gov. Jay Inslee Friday sent a letter directing the state Department of Fish and Wildlife to initiate a new rulemaking relating to wolf management. The directive comes after Inslee accepted the appeal from the Center for Biological Diversity that challenged the Department's decision to deny the Center's petition to amend current wolf management rules. The petition argued that current rules fail to prioritize non-lethal management of endangered wolves.

COVID death rate confusion

Last week the CDC released a data report that was misconstrued because a part of the data was taken out of context and made it seem that only 6% of the deaths were the only deaths from COVID-19. After going back to the original report, that impression of the data has been determined as being false.

"They [the CDC] put out a release and a certain part of that release was taken up on Twitter and not really understood," said Pacific County Health Department COVID Response Program Manager Stephanie Michael. "That created a lot of issues."

In the data 6% of the deaths were listed as COVID-19 being the single cause of death. The other 94% of the deaths had COVID-19 and an underlying factor listed on the death certificate.

Explore south Lewis County in a scavenger hunt

After talking with several local businesses, the Lewis County News decided to team up with Amy Smith of Boss Hoggs BBQ and start a community scavenger hunt. This will be a community event with the grand prize being a $50 Visa gift card. Now here is the fun part, we are asking you to participate by going into local businesses.

We wanted to do something to help the local businesses but we also wanted to offer something fun for students and parents during distance learning. Here is what we are doing:

Lowe's is coming to Benaroya Industrial Park
Lowe's is coming to Benaroya Industrial Park

Winlock Benaroya Industrial Park has signed its first contract. Lowe's will be coming to the industrial park with a 1.2 million square foot building. The process to get here has been long and arduous.

The project started nearly 20 years ago, with the purchase of land by the Benaroya Company. Former mayor Cy Meyers, worked diligently to get the area into the Winlock Urban Growth Area, the largest expansion ever.
