Inslee extends school closures

Governor Jay Inslee and Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal announced on April 6, 2020 that Washington schools will remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. This order keeps both public and private schools closed.

The proclamation basically prohibits in-person instruction through June 19. Educational facilities will remain accessible for limited use including the take-home meals for students.

Newspapers in survival mode, too

Given the ongoing shutdown in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, like nearly all local businesses, we had to make some difficult decisions last week.

Among those was the decision to reduce the number of print pages.

So in balancing our lack of print "real estate" with increasing news and feature coverage, we've opted to put more on our webpage, www.hometowndebate.com, and our Facebook page.

Another tough decision that local businesses are making is to cut back hours and even layoff some staff. We have not done that. We are seeking help through the federal government's payroll protection stimulus. Employers, talk to your bank about this. The process is very straight forward. My application took me about 15 minutes to fill out.

We didn't make these decisions lightly. They, and others, were born out of necessity. We thank you in advance for your understanding.

DSHS receives supplemental funding for Basic Food benefits

As of March 30, 2020, some Washington residents who receive Basic Food benefits will have more funds to buy food in March and April. Congress approved extra benefits up to the maximum amount allowed for each household. In Washington, this means DSHS is giving more benefits to about 277,000 households.

"Having the ability to purchase more healthy food is critically important during these unprecedented times," said Director of DSHS Community Services Division Babs Roberts. "We're glad the U.S. Congress extended these emergency benefits to Washington residents. This can help people to reduce the number of times they need to go shopping for groceries and also limit the number of people in stores, helping keep us all safe and healthy at home."

Mobile testing continues in Pacific County

During the first two weeks of April, Pacific County continued mobile testing for coronavirus. So far 146 people have been tested with just 1 resident (who is out of state) confirmed positive.

Mobile testing sites were set up two weeks ago, one in north county and one in south county. A total of 51 individuals have been tested at the mobile sites. During the first week 13 individuals were tested in a South Bend site and 12 individuals were tested in a Long Beach site. All of the mobile tests have come back negative. Shoalwater Bay Clinic is setting up to start testing soon. Testing will continue while the COVID-19 crisis exists.

Pacific County resident who is out-of-state diagnosed with COVID-19

The Pacific County Department of Health & Human Services in conjunction with the Pacific County Emergency Operations Center has received notice that an individual from Pacific County, but currently in another state, has been diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus. The individual that was diagnosed has been out of Washington State for over a month. The individual was tested out of state and is currently receiving treatment out of state. The positive diagnosis is being attributed to Pacific County's statistics because Pacific County is the diagnosed person's place of residence. After extensive investigative efforts by the Health Department's skilled nursing staff, there is no reason to believe that this case's positive diagnosis has caused any exposure in Pacific County.

The Pacific County Department of Health & Human Services, Washington State Department of Health, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are closely monitoring the coronavirus issue (COVID-19) at this time and will continue to update our county with pertinent information as it becomes available.
