City of Napavine Police Department gets new mascot

Napavine has a new sergeant and this isn't just any sergeant. This is Sergeant Stripes, the new mascot for the City of Napavine Police Department.

Sergeant Stripes was introduced at the Napavine City Council meeting on January 22, 2019 to the Napavine city council and mayor. Sergeant Stripes came in excited to be a part of such a great city.

Sergeant Stripes will be accompanying Chief Salyers to events to teach kids about the importance of law enforcement.

Napavine School District goes to voters for Replacement Levy

On February 12, 2019, the Napavine School District will be going out to its voters for a Replacement Educational Programs and Operations Levy. Passage of the levy would assist Napavine School District in funding educational progams and operations not funded by the State of Washington, including, but not limited to: maintaining low class sizes, nurse time, after school enrichment activities, after school tutoring programs, middle and high school athletic activities programs, transportation outside of the basic school day, curriculum replacement, technology upgrades and enhancements, maintenance and operations outside of basic education funding, special education programs not funded through basic education, security and emergency preparedness, and much more.

A mysterious crash closed portion of SR 6; "It wasn't us," says USPS

The Raymond Post Office has been the talk of the town after a wacky incident unfolded near Garden Tracts in Raymond. A local postal carrier found herself in a predicament after a crash closed a section of State Route 6. Anyone passing by the area at the time observed that her postal vehicle had its flashers on and was stopped next to two Washington State Patrol vehicles.

Elk are on the move throughout the county

For the past couple of weeks, numerous homeowners and drivers along SR 105 just outside Raymond have seen a large herd of elk moving around the area. Some reports have counted around 80-90 elks in the heard. Many residents have been startled as the herd stampedes through their properties during the later evening hours. Both drivers and residents are encouraged to keep a lookout as the herd continues to move.

State pushing new gun law bills; I-1639 begins

Washington state lawmakers have introduced or reintroduced a number of gun bills in Olympia hoping to strengthen gun laws in the state. Most have made it past the committees and are now on the Senate and House floors. The momentum for the bills comes after voters overwhelming passed Initiative 1639 back in November of 2018. Initiative 1639 changed the laws and regulations surrounding "semi-automatic assault rifles" and also requires more extensive background checks for firearm purchases along with requirements for safe gun storage.
