May Day Parade

Vader is known for their awesome May Day parade and this year was no exception. A few hundred people came out to see the parade and events afterward. There were food booths, arts and crafts and many items for sale by vendors.

Winlock is saying goodbye to a volunteer who has worked tirelessly for Winlock since 2000. Chuck Sonner from the Winlock Vader Food Bank and Rowdy Rooster Bistro retired on May 2, 2018.

Napavine is famous for many of their talented athletes such as graduates Grace Hamre, Connor Locke and many more. There are still plenty of newer athletes who are putting in the competition and working hard towards state championships. Mollie Olson will be headed towards the State track meet, this will be her fourth year in a row to attend. An upcoming sophomore by the name of Yoselyn Sandoval, has drawn attention.

Sandoval first started track in 7th grade and looked up to her older brother, Kevin Sandoval. He was participating in high school track and she admired him for his work ethic and natural athleticism. That inspiration led her to join track in high school.

National Teacher's Week: Erika Harmer of Chauncey Davis Elementary

May 8 is National Teacher Day along with the entire week being Teacher Appreciation Week. Erika Harmer who teaches third-grade at Chauncey Davis Elementary School in South Bend has been with the district for the past 17 years and is commended by her peers as being passionate about teaching each and every day.

Harmer grew up in Montesano and graduated from Montesano High School in the Class of 1989. She began her teaching career in 1993 with the Hoquiam School District teaching at Emerson Elementary. "I worked with Hoquiam for about 8 years before coming over to South Bend," she said. "I believe it was back in 2001 I came to work here and I've been here ever since. I just love it here and I hope to finish my career here some day. This is my 25th year of teaching and I just love it!"

Pickernell gets harsh sentence in domestic violence case

SOUTH BEND - Thomas James Pickernell, 37, of Raymond was sentenced to 3 years and 5 months in prison for third degree assault, domestic violence.

"Although the victim in this case did not want to pursue charges, and had no injuries, we felt that for her safety and the safety of our community, that someone who attempts to strangle another commits a serious crime," Pacific County Prosecutor Mark McClain told the Herald.

The Crisis Support Network along with several agencies placed pinwheels along US 101 between Duryea and Commerical Streets to bring awareness of child abuse for National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April.
