Dear Savvy Senior,

My brother and his wife, who are ages 60 and 56, were recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and prediabetes, and neither one had a clue. Could I have it too?

South Bend School District is receiving, from the state capital budget, 70% of the funds (over $11 million) needed to build a new elementary school. Voters are being presented with a $4.95 million-dollar bond proposal this April 24, 2018 in order to raise the remaining funds for the project. With student and staff safety on the forefront of many people's minds, one question we are getting from people is, "Will the new South Bend elementary school have updated safety/security enhancements?"

The Napavine Police Department has a new addition to their police force, John Meyers of Winlock. Napavine has needed a third officer for quite some time and it was finally approved in the budget.

The Toledo High School's Annual Mr. T Pageant happened again March 8, run by Toledo High School's teachers Ron Gaul and Horst Malunat. The Mr. T Pageant is for senior boys to dress up and compete in certain events, and all in all, make complete fools out of themselves.

The Winlock City Council approved a letter at the last council meeting on February 26, 2018, to be sent to Toledo Mayor Steve Dobosh regarding the Interlocal Agreement for Law Enforcement Services.

The letter acts as written notice terminating the Interlocal Agreement between Winlock and Toledo if the breaches are not cured within 30 days.

The February letter is a follow up to a letter sent by Winlock Mayor Don Bradshaw to Toledo Mayor Dobosh on January 2, 2018. It was then that Mayor Bradshaw informed Mayor Dobosh the desire to bring back the Winlock Police Department and terminate the Interlocal Agreement between the two cities. Toledo did not respond to the letter sent in January.

Police and the Sheriff's Office are warning south county residents to be on the lookout for strange packages after a package found in Long Beach on March 8 turned out to be two homemade explosive devices.

A caller notified dispatch after discovering one of the packages and the State Patrol Bomb Squad was called in to destroy the packages after they were moved to a secure location by Long Beach Police.

For the second time in a week a fire broke out at a residence in Raymond on March 8. At approximately 1:22 a.m. Pacific County Fire District 3 (Menlo Fire Dept.) responded to the 3000 block of Oldani Road for a report of a structure fire with a victim possibly still inside.
