A word from SB School District

South Bend School District is proposing a $4.95 million dollar bond initiative to voters this April 24, 2018. Revenue from the bond, in conjunction with over $11 million from state special funding provided in the capital budget and School Construction Assistance Program, will provide the needed funds of approximately $16 million dollars to construct a new elementary school, replacing the almost 70-year-old Chauncey Davis Elementary building. This article attempts to provide specific information about the project and proposed bond.

I-5 closed due to accident

On Sunday, Feb. 18, I-5 was closed in both directions near Winlock/Toledo due to a four-car pileup due to snow in the area. Several vehicles were totaled and two people were sent to Providence Hospital in Centralia.

The Lewis County Sheriff's Office held its annual meeting yesterday afternoon at Bethel Church in Chehalis. The office holds a meeting every year to recognize outstanding work by its employees and community members. Strategic planning and agency goals for the year ahead are also shared with employees and their families at the meeting.

Eight days of razor clam planned

State shellfish managers have tentatively scheduled razor clam digs through April on four ocean beaches.

Final approval of all scheduled openings at Copalis, Mocrocks, Long Beach and Twin Harbors beaches will depend on whether results of marine toxin tests show the clams are safe to eat.

Raymond awarded grant for Park Ave sidewalk

The City of Raymond has been awarded a grant to not just replace, but also install a sidewalk on Park Ave., giving safer access to Lions Park in the Riverdale area.

Raymond Public Works Director Eric Weiberg explained that the city put in for several grants and was fortunate enough to be awarded this one. Each grant has certain criteria that must be met in order to be put in for consideration.

Weyerhaeuser came to the rescue after a log truck lost its rear end at the intersection of Hwy 101 and Heath St. with a fully loaded trailer. Raymond Police, South Bend Police and Washington Department of Transportation were also on scene.
