Through the double doors of the Winlock batting cage you can hear the metallic singing of a bat striking home on a regulation softball. Inside on false grass, girls are practicing, rope nets surrounding them to protect bystanders from the occasional stray ball.

A portion of Highway 505 at Winlock was closed temporarily due to a sinkhole that opened suddenly on Monday, Feb. 27. Winlock Public Works Superintendent Mike Fisher explained that county and state authorities were on scene within 15 and 30 minutes respectively. At the time of publication there was no timeframe as to how long the road would be closed. Mayor Lonnie Dowell was on hand to work with state and county officials to correct the problem temporarily.

Winlock Miller Elementary School was the place to be on Feb. 15, with over 195 people showing up for the dinner of ham, potatoes, salad, and pie hosted by the Winlock PTSA as part of their Reading Night Book Tasting. The event was sponsored by the Winlock School District Title 1 program.

'Resistance' group forms in opposition to Trump policies

Pacific County is now home to a group calling themselves Willapa Bay Resistance. The self-described progressive group formed in early January of this year.


A number of groups using the term "resistance" in their names have sprung up around the country in opposition to the current presidential administration.

Mayor Dunsmoor to step down

Raymond Mayor Jason Dunsmoor announced at the city's Feb. 21 council meeting that he will be stepping down as mayor, effective March 31, due to his taking up of the position of general manager for Pacific County PUD #2, where he will replace the retiring Doug Miller. Interviews for candidates interested in the position of mayor are scheduled to be held at the regular scheduled council meeting on March 20.
