Feb. 24 - 26: FisherPoets Gathering is located in downtown Astoria on Feb. 24 to 26. The FisherPoets Gathering is an authentic, creative celebration of life in the commercial fishing industry. A hundred fisherpoets from coasts near and far share original stories, songs and poetry with each other. Enjoy storytelling, workshops, a self-guided cannery tour film and visual arts. Mar. 2: Pacific Co Republican Meeting - Pacific County Republicans will meet on Thursday, March 2. If your mom needs some assistance with daily living activities like bathing or getting dressed, managing her medications, preparing meals, housekeeping, laundry or just getting around, an assisted living facility is definitely a good option to consider.

Assisted living facilities are residential communities that offer different levels of health or personal care services for seniors who want or need help with daily living.

There are around 40,000 assisted living facilities (also called board and care, supportive-care or residential-care facilities) in the U.S. today, some of which are part of a retirement community or nursing home. Most facilities have between 25 and 125 suites, varying in size from a single room to a full apartment. And some even offer special memory care units for residents with dementia. Here are some steps you can take to help you choose a good facility.

Toledo's fourth quarter comeback fell short Saturday night at WF West High School. Senior guard CJ Kovacs' free throws in the second half helped keep the number one seed Life Christian Academy Eagles from letting their 14 point lead mysteriously disappear, and two clutch steals by senior post Luke Lovelady diffused Toledo's final chances in the last minute to win or force overtime.

Toledo came into Saturday's game intent on playing the role of spoiler in a game that nobody except Indian fans saw coming. Three days after disposing of their league rival and previously undefeated Napavine Tigers by a 25 point margin, Toledo found themselves, once again, the underdog as they came out against the number two seed in the state, the Eagles.

The Toledo School bond is currently failing with Superintendent Chris Rust stating, "The election won't be certified until Feb. 24, but I don't anticipate enough of a change to hit the 60 percent mark this time. I'm working to gather our community members together soon to look at the results and hear how to adjust in order to get the community's desires related to our facilities. I'm especially interested in hearing from voters who didn't vote or who couldn't support the measure, so that their voices are reflected in a future measure."

A meeting of the Transition Team convened at the Olequa Senior Center in Winlock on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 1:00 p.m. where a presentation titled "Understanding Lewis County Senior Programs and Aging in America" was given by Glenda Forga, who has been appointed by the County Commissioners to head the team.

Questions posed to the Commissioners at a meeting held on Feb. 1 didn't elicit the information the team was hoping for, and Forga said she would again approach the commissioners for specific financial information per center. All agreed it is very important to ascertain each center's actual budget and determine the future expenses facing each center.

Winlock Improvement Network (WIN) held a successful strategic plan workshop on Saturday, Feb. 11, which was facilitated by Johanna Jones. Jones is a professional facilitator who donated her skills and time to our community. Her background includes work for credit unions and creation of strategic plans for the City of DuPont and various nonprofits, including Vision: Toledo. She currently lives in Toledo and is treasurer for both Vision: Toledo and the Toledo Library.

The City of Winlock is looking for individuals interested in receiving free training in the field of water and wastewater management. This is a volunteer position for anyone over the age of 18 with a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

The goal of this program is to prepare the volunteer for a position in the water and wastewater field and more specifically to prepare the volunteer for the required test they must take in order to work in the field.

This year's team of AmeriCorps volunteers serving Pacific County comprises 14 members working at nine different service sites. The team is organized under the auspices of the Pacific County Youth Alliance.

Those looking to brush up on their Mandarin or just pick up the basics can now do so locally at Jane's Language & Art Nest located in the Canary Cottage building off Highway 101 in Raymond.

Starting on March 1, South Bend will have it's own 24-hour gas station to match the 101 Quick Stop Chevron Station in Raymond. The South Bend Food Mart & 76 Station (formerly known as Jackpot) will be opening its doors 24 hours a day, six days a week, according to the store's owner, 46-year-old Paul Kim.

Kim stated in an interview that he opened this particular business eight years ago after deciding to move to the area from up north. Kim said he was able to finance the move and opening of the store in South Bend himself using capital from other business ventures.

SOUTH BEND - Sarah L. Heward, 40, of South Bend was sentenced to 1 year and 1 month in prison for two counts of second degree assault and residential burglary. Heward had been in a relationship and when it ended she believed her ex-boyfriend had posted nude photographs of her on Facebook. The proceeding went down Friday afternoon in Pacific County Superior Court.
